Timing chains a MAJOR problem!!

My 2007 XL7 currently has 80 000 KMS or approx. 50 000 miles. My engine light came on a few weeks ago but would only come on for a short time then go off for a period of time. I checked the code and it came up as a P008, something to do with the crank or cam shaft timing. But since the light was not staying on permanently I thought it might just be a problem with the sensor itself. About 2 weeks later the light came on and stayed on. The truck seemed to be running fine and have not noticed any lack of performance. I brought it to the Suzuki dealer this morning to find out that the timing chains need to be changed. I was told that this is a problem/flaw with these motors. The parts have been ordered and my vehicle will be spending 2-3 days next week. This is all covered under the powertrain warranty. I did ask if I should expect the same problem 80 000 KMS later and they said probably not since they are replacing the parts with what is suppose to better quality parts from Suzuki. I am not impressed at all with this problem and I will probably get rid of this vehicle by next year. I have lost confidence with this vehicle!

RHYTHIM, I'm not sure as to the mfg date, i'll post it later... Mine came from Gott's a lil fly by night stealership in Rivergate. They had it a year ago for 4 days trying to fix an issue with the heater and never got it fixed... I wouldn't take a pedal car to those clowns...

XL7NB, I was hoping they would put a new engine in mine, it'll be for sale just as soon as it gets done. I'm done with Suzukis... The lady @ customer relations told me that if the parts were gonna be a while that she would pull some strings to get me a loaner... I'd call them and raise enough hell that they would either quit taking my calls or put me in something, 2 months is ridiculous. reguardless of what they say, I'd change my oil every 3000 miles with Mobile1 synthetic and use the suzuki filter just so that when if happens again you have the upper hand. Make sure they allow you the full 10 yr 100,000 warranty on the new engine...

I bought all cars in the States, so my guess would be they are American..
but i'm not 100% sure. Since the cars are all sold they are in different
workshops at the moment.

i'll gather the information and get back here.

thanks so far.

The GM link http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f...stretch-98372/ talks about 2010 3.6 engines having the same problem with the chains. Some with as little as 4k miles. Someone even mentions that the chains are made in China? What i found interesting is that the original chains are single and someone mentions in that forum, that the replacement chains are double roller chains? Of course double roller chains are more durable, so my question is, what are the Suzuki replacement chains? Single or Double? If they are double wouldn't you have to change all the sprockets as well?
The GM link makes it sound like the aftermarket chains are better, what do you guys think?

Sorry, that didn't help me..
Try to find the engine number.
Usually stamped on the back near the bell housing.

Hello to all

I have the same problem - P0008 DTC.
After looking at timing chains I found timing chain bank A is knocking on a cover.
I think it is coused by tensonier or/and streching the chain.

I am looking for part numbers and parts for the Suzuki XL7 2007. Engine number is 22806 09:26, 08TZ.

Lumpylarry - can you help me please ?

Regards, Gerard

Yes it's possible..
This job is not an easy task..
There special tools and it's a complicated timing procedure..

Thanks for a quick answer.
After removing the cover off I check that the chains are in proper positions. The marks are ok.

As I found I have 2008 timing set (silent secondary upper chains) in 2007 year vehicle ?

Suzuki XL7 2007 N36A 3.6L
Engine number is 4860 06MV7 16184

I attached some pics.

Engine light came on at 92,000 miles

I have an 07 XL7 Bought new back in 2007 of May , Comming home from a trip the other night and Engine light came on , So I ran it on my scanner and got the code that everyone hers seems to be getting . Took to Dealership and its the Timming chains , Was told no problem we will fix under your 100,000 powertrain warranty , They gave me a Rental :) Headed on my way . and I get a phone call from the Dealership saying I needed to show proof of oil changes . Well I said oh crap I dont keep my recipts , but I do right it down in my log book everytime I service my car wich is every 3000 miles , I know some people do 5000 but I was brought up every 3000 so it has stuck with me . So I told the dealership I have no recipts but a log book , So a day went bye and I got a call today , Yes good News , There going to do it under warranty with out me proving I did my oil changes ! Cause My Dealership (SOUTHTOWN HYUNDAI and SUZUKI) Went to bat for me and convince Suzuki it was the right thing to do . :) So I want to Put a Shouht out to Them!!!!!! , So I should Have my car back Monday Evening ;)

Techline has told me dirty oil won't cause the chains to stretch, which makes sense. Since these engines burn oil LACK of oil can effect the VVT system and throw some of the same codes. I still recommend changing every 3000miles/5000kms, but if you go longer CHECK your oil at least.

Here is the latest one I did...quite dirty inside compared to some pictures shown here. 87,000km.

I follow Jeff recomendation of changing the oil every 3,000 miles with 5.5 quarts. The engine consumes about half a quart every 3k miles (normal), and we have experience no lights, or any other problems with the engine in approximately 46,000 miles.

Streched chains is a common problem in LY7 engine type. I have had 45,000 miles on clocks when the light came on.
The P0008 / 9 code lignt on when one of the tensioners is in position full out. I had P0008 code which is a marker of streched chain of right bank. After removing a cover i noticed that the right chain is not prim in comaprison to left bank - probably the tensioner in full out.
After droping the chains off the engine both higher chians are streched - it is about 0,5 inch comparing to new chains.
I apply the oil quality is not guilty the streched chains. Rather a material of the chains is bad quality.

I have a 2007 XL-7 with 78,000 miles. Just got the Cam Chain code this month and the Suzuki Dealer replaced the assembly under Warranty. I am hopping that the new one is of better quality because I plan on keeping the vehicle. I saw another XL-7 in the shop when I was there and they dropped the entire front drive, K member and engine out to do the job. I would hate to think what it would have cost if not covered by the 100K Warranty.

Guys, my 2007 xl7 with 59k miles is hesitating badly. Popping codes P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304 AND P0306 MISFIRES AND MISFIRE CYLINDERS 1-6

After reading all these threads, I think its the Timing chain(s).

I have not brought it to any dealer yet.
Before I do, What Do i need to get in order if I want this to be covered by the powertrain warranty?

HELP!!

When was your last oil change?
The way you describe it, sounds like your cam actuators are starving for oil..
If you follow the oil life monitor, you're probably down to less than 3 liters left in the engine..

last oil change was less than 3 months ago.
i really think its the time chain issue since all the cylinders are missfiring.

i hope im wrong.

If it is, what does that cost?

ball park?

I don't think it's chains.. You would have a P0008
After 3 months you should be down at least a quart or or 2..

The dipstick can be decieving.. Please check again very carefully..
Even add a quart and recheck.
I'm almost positive it's low..
