Bad Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)

My 99 GV with 135k Started dieing at stoplights and running with very little power and eventually threw a code. P0103 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input.

I pulled the MAF and cleaned it really good along with the connector and ensured everything was clean. The Throttle body looks great as well. I cleared the code and the car ran perfect for 3 days. Then it all came back. I unplugged the Sensor and now it at least idles, but has zero power anything more that half 1/4 throttle. You can tell the computer just leans out the motor really bad.

Looking online, I can't find a replacment MAF anywhere! Looking in the forum I see that comes with Throttle body. Screw That, I am not paying $1000 for a part that can be easily replaced. Any Ideas?? Is there any other part that could be the cause of this?

I did a complete tune up a few months ago and the car has ran perfect for over a year until this started. I already tried seafoam in the tank as well.

No additional areas to look at that I know of, but others may know.

I'd re-boot the ECU by disconnecting the battery and if that doesn't do it, re-clean the sensor and it's connector. ;)

After that, a good / used junkyard replacement before I'd spring for any high dollar NEW sensor. :(

Edit add:
Here is a MAF test procedure...

I unhooked the battery for 10minutes last night to reset the computer. Was a little hard to start this morning. I drove it to work and it died once a stoplight. Commute is 15miles with about 5 stoplights and 4 miles of freeway. So far no SEL and seems to be driving ok. Will keep my fingers crossed.

Have not changed the fuel filter but I will. Good Maint Anyway.

I drove it to lunch and at the 3rd stoplight, it died. When I restarted, the SEL is on. It still ran fine though. On my way back it never died at a stoplight, but it did loose power for a few seconds at half throttle going up a hill. I will get the code checked on my have, but I have feeling I know what it will be.

I'm with Max here. Get to the wreckers before the truck won't drive anymore and get a used one. These are not common failure items so the chances of getting a bad used one is small. If this was for a Chevy half ton I'd say go buy a new one lol

Must be some way to test those sensors. I'd consult the service manual first. If no manual do a full throttle body service, clean IAC, Throttle bore and plate. Check battery\alternator voltage. There is not much to fail on an airflow sensor. Maybe pull off the air filter cover or crack it open and take for a drive. The air pickup is in the fender, maybe a mouse is living in there now? Good Luck

Same code. Last night I put in the "New" MAF from here. SUZUKI SIDEKICK ESTEEM AERIO AIR FLOW METER AFH55M-13: eBay Motors (item 110537539425 end time Jul-23-10 10:52:28 PDT)

After putting it in, it actually ran worse. Same simptoms, but more prominent. After that, I thouroughly cleaned the Throttle body and IAC. Bypassed the air filter to rule out blocked air tube. Still runs like crap and has the code. I think I may have got a bad MAF from Ebay. I will contact the company and try to get another. I am having issues finding one locally in any wrecking yards.

Ad says...

You've got a GV.

And don't you LOVE the "may fit" part!

Same component part numbers as what you removed at least?
Part Looks Identicle. But the "new" one has no part numbers on the outside of it. It looks as though the cover was removed from the sensor, and a replacement part was glued back on. That is why i am thinking it is bad one.

Well in that case, that's what the e-bay one says it is and I guess you SHOULD be ok, cept' for a possible bad (new) replacement OR it's something else all together wrong. :(

And I think you are correct, that's a "reman" unit from what I see on reman sensor selling prices elsewhere.

MAF Replacement

Would like to thank everyone for the great help. My 2000 GV was also throwing EGR and MAF codes. Sapien was spot on with his instructions and pics and saved myself hundreds. Thanks!!
I took the part number off the MAF sensor and Googled it and came across an eBay link. Decided to take a chance and dropped the $100.00 for the part even though the GV was not listed as applicable. Appeared to be the same and installed it. I had to "encourage the connector to cooperate a bit but it eventually "fit". Reset the computer and it ran a bit rough at first but did eventually did smooth out and now runs quite nicely. I still have a bit of a low idle and it does bounce a bit at 500-600 rpm, but not all the time. At least it does not stall out as before. I did take out a little slack in the throttle cable which did help a bit. Runs better than ever and not throwing any codes.
