*1995 Sidekick JX 4 door
*AUTO 4 speed (O/D unfortunately)
*1.6L 16 valve
*161,900 miles
*Have not "come together" with a chick in her yet, only had her 2 weeks. Nothing like having sex in roller skate
*Thinking about getting rid of the subwoofer box. There's very little space as it is

There's pros and cons to a '95 vs a '96. Actually there are no pros because 96 parts are everywhere.

It wakes me up in the middle of the night, if that neutral safety switch goes, I'm fucked. I've searched everywhere just in case I will need one. I have the 4 speed (3 speed with O/D). That makes things complicated to bypass it. If she didn't have O/D I could bypass it, maybe.

Bypassing that switch could cause major transmission issues. COULD. I don't know. I hope I never have to find out. There is 2 black wires, you cut those...it would bypass but again, she might not want to shift.

When I bought her, I figured parts would be difficult but not impossible. That switch is impossible.

I'm doing the timing belt next week. Upon close examination, I noticed the fan belt was actually SAWING in to the timing cover. Cut it pretty good. Any word on why that happened? I ordered another cover. I'm going to do the tension pulley and the water pump while i'm in there... those parts I can actually find.

I'd like to go to one of these Suzuki events, guys sleep in tents and four wheel their shit in the woods, sit by the fire at night. They run at night too, but I'm years away from a lightbar and a lift (not even sure I want a lift, I almost roll over as it is).

It sounds awesome. Not rolling over, the events. But I'm pissed scared I'll break something and won't be able to find the part. I think it would be a cool ass thing to take a woman to, ya know? Not a lot of guys do stuff like that. I'm sure there will be a bunch of dickheads in 2020 Toyota Tacoma's out there,
well you can find parts!

This is my introduction. More to come, because I need a hell of a lot of help with her. Have a good day Gentlemen.

Welcome to the forum. Nice looking car. You will find the factory parts catalog here, if you put your VIN in the box, which will then bring up the factory parts catalog for your car.
Searching for things using the part number will be helpful, and Megazip will probably have much of what you need. I would also suggest looking through this stickie on the forum, to familiarize yourself with your engine and tranny:
Especially before you tackle the timing belt. Or ask questions. There are many members of this forum who will be happy to help you.

I'll say this, primarily because you seem to be fixated on it, bypassing the neutral safety switch, if necessary, is actually a very simple task. As for the O/D, I can't, for the life of me figure out, why you think that makes the slightest bit of difference, all it means is that the fourth gear has a less than 1:1 ratio. The 03-72LE transmission is a pretty reliable unit and used on quite a few vehicles, including some with significantly more power than your Sidekick has.

The fan belt and the timing belt cover - is it actually the fan belt that's cutting into the cover, or the crank pulley? That usually happens because the timing belt cover is warped, and that usually happens when the cover seals (a narrow rubber strip around the edge) swell because of leaked or spilt oil.

Thank you friends.

The reason I thought the O/D would make a difference bypassing, my senior chief said it would. I didn't really question it, I don't know where he found that info. That was before we changed the starter. The guy I bought her from said it was the neutral safety switch. What a moron. It would start sometimes and other times just click once.

So i thought, before I lose all my hair over this lets change the starter. Problem solved.

It definitely looks like the belt that's sliced in to the cover. I won't know for sure until i get down in there. I'm replacing the cover and both belts, should be good.

I found this amazing link that is much more helpful to me than the Chiltons manual regarding the timing belt:

Timing Belt & Water Pump 16v replacement

It is difficult to say from the photo, but it does look like it’s the timing belt cover that’s out of position, rather than the belt/pulley.

While you’re in there, check the torque of the 17mm bolt in the center of the crank pulley. Many people remove this bolt when doing the timing belt, even though that’s unnecessary, and when they replace it, they don’t torque it properly. It’s meant to be torued to 94 ft/lbs. If it is, leave it alone. If not…….
