Have a 2001 Vitara, 2.0, automatic, 80,000 miles. Sometimes it dies while idling (like at a red light) and won't start for 10 min. (turns over but won't start) Or, I drive for 20-30 min. to pick up my son at daycare after work, and when I come out it won't start again for 10 or so min., and sounds rough. However it starts up every morning just fine. Seems to happen after it's heated up. Anyone else have this problem? Please help.

thats a hard one.
can be lots of things. truely.
starts cold but non hot soaked.
this can be flooding or fuel starvation or loss of spark.

a mech, would.
check for spark whet dies.
then the color of spark tips (plugs) when it dies or wont start.
wet with gas?
ever replace the spark plugs ever ? they dont last the life of motor.
he'd use his/her nose to smell tail pipe to see if running rich.
he use secret Unflood motor ( depress gas pedal to floorboards ,aka: WOT) this kills fuel injections unflooding the motor.
if motor floods ( after tune up) hed try to start motor with tiny gas pedal feed 5%)
if the iSC is stuck closed , motor tend to flood so this trick adds the missing air
that ISC forgot to supply. ( these are all tricks of the trade)

now if you car is loosing spark then all that above is just wasted time.
spark loss?
tune up?
CEL lamp on key on , and out running.?
if on , why not pull the DTC errors.?
if CEL is out the car may have P030x DTC errors pending (misfire)

if you have spark loss on all 4 COP coils then the CAS may be dead.
again the SCAN tool will show dead CAS .

these ,motors love to have dead CAS ( on the rear of cam shaft) and love
to fail heat soak.

gets hot and CAS dies. ( parking a car allows all that heat in the motor to rise
and make the CAS supper hot) this kills them.

those my ideas.

and you are on the wrong forum but are welcome non the less.

Search the forum - I think there are several threads that deal with a problem of this nature - and point to the cam position sensor.

Apparently it's known to fail when it heats up.

Edit - take a look at these threads - one of them shows the cam position sensor and mentions putting a wet rag on it to bring the temperature down. I think that would be a "sure fire test" to determine if it is the cause of your problem.

you most likely have a bad CAS, that electr sender on the driven at end of camshaft. (left cam rear? IIRC)
and are infamous for heat soak fails.
yours starts and runs , cold every time, right.?

so you have 2 paths.
1: prove its bad ( tests)
2: swap it and pray it is.

like i tried to say post 2. (your situation and symptoms)
1: failed starts can be caused by many reason.
a: loss of spark ( CAS above)
b: loss of fuel.
c: flooding.

did you try to start he car hot; when dead, by using WOT? (wide open throttle cuts fuel , unflood mode of ECU)
did you check spark when it dont start? (that be the very first check)
did you try test fuel, if spark is good (failed start) and then tried test fuel? (if sure not flooded)

tests: this is like 3 tests. i could list more but those are the prime fail paths.

truly no body has to guess. ? why guess?
a scan tool will reveal the ECT and thermostat issues pronto.

it is your money and you can spend it, guessing or testing .
time or money , I sure cant say what is best only you can.

$73 plus ship is new CAS. BTW
cheers

here are other things that cause starts to fail hot.
just so you know.

ECT reading too low temperature. for realty ( causing gross hot restarts) to fail.
Thermostat bad, letting running too cold.
Spark plugs never changed in over 60kmiles.
Fuel pump reg. stuck closed an pressure is real high.

high presssure may allow car to start cold but , when hot, the car will flood and
foul the plugs.

as you can see there are lots of thing that can go wrong.
not all fails are, easy.
