Vitara Advice

Hello all,

I'm after a bit of advice as I'm considering getting a pre 2019 Vitara as a 2nd car, to be used mainly by my other half. I'm an ex mechanic and do the vast majority of work on our cars myself other than work which isn't possible on axle stands, but I have no familiarity with Suzuki vehicles.

It will definitely be an allgrip model but I'm deliberating over which engine. My main desires in order of importance are reliability, ease and low cost of repairs, and decent MPG. Peformance is far less of a concern.

Without knowing the engines my gut instinct is that the 1.6 petrol will be the most reliable and cheapest/easiest to fix as its the simplest engine being a petrol and naturally aspirated.

Looking at reported real world MPG figures the 1.6 petrol seems to do just as well if not better than the 1.4 booster jet.

The diesel is tempting based on the excellent MPG but there's so much more to go wrong, turbos, injectors, DMF, DPF etc.

I'd appreciate and information on the reliability of all these engines (and gearboxes). Any common faults, or things which don't last well on any of them?

How gutless is the 1.6? bearable or awful?
Any thoughts on MPG between 1.4 and 1.6? I've see high 40's mentioned by people for mixed driving.

Thanks in advance! all info welcome

Andy

"Pre2019 Vitara" spans a forty year period - AllGrip implies 2015~2019 - if those are the years you're considering, I would agree with the 1.6 petrol as the best choice, for the reasons mentioned.

The 1.0 & 1.4 are direct injection which is a redflag for me, and I don't do diesel.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear, but yes I'm talking about the Model that immediately preceeded the changeover, one of the latest ones - so likely a 2017 or 2018 model.

Thank you for your thoughts!

I think they are all reliable...
isn't the 1.6 only 5 gear only?

also look at this video

they took apart a 1.4 vitara after 100k and it's almost new, even carbon deposit is minimal for DI engine.

I have the 1.4 mild hybrid Allgrip, from New - first 4k - I had about 45 mpg...
