Tire valve stem broke

OK, my wife comes in and says the right rear tire is flat. In her hand is part of the valve stem! OK, I've never seen a broken valve stem before. Anyway, I know I'm going to have to bring it in to have a new valve stem installed. My question is this, "Is this also the tire pressure sensor?" There is a nut that holds the valve stem and I loosened it. When I move the valve stem (what's left of it) around it feels like something big inside. If it is also the sensor then I guess I will have to take it to either a Suzuki or GM dealer and have a new valve stem/sensor installed.

Thanks in advance,

It's not a recall is it? Seems like a safety issue to me. Of course they are too busy hanging Toyota to notice a little thing like this on a GM built car.

unfortunately that kit doesn't include the actual sensor.. and stem (where it broke) is part of the sensor..
they retail for around $100

they look like this..
and they crack just at the base of the cap.

How do you check without pulling the old one out? I'll have to bite the bullet on this one as I can't wait a week to get one off eBay. Maybe I'll order some spares. I checked the other three and they look ok. If I was only running around town I would just run on the donut but this is the Easter long weekend and I've got some highway driving to do.

i can get the stems seals and nuts only the odd one at a time.
i kno some one that works in the factory that makes them.
cant get the sensor but if you can tell me the part number i may be able to give you info on a person in the uk that can reprogram them to the car very cheep

I guess I should have added to my profile. I live in Canada so if your buddy makes house calls accross the pond for free.:D:D:D

Is it done through the dash. Or is it something in my manual.

press the "i" button until it says learn tire position. select.
it will beep and light the marker lights.
let air out of the tires one at a time until it beeps starting at left front, and continue clockwise around the car.
when its done it will beep twice.
then reset tire pressures and all is good..

These things are CRAP!! I have two that are broken. They just seemed to disintegrate and fall apart. Can I replace with the traditional rubber valve stem and not worry about it? Also will I keep getting the display message low tire pressure if I do?

Thanks

yes you CAN replace with regular valve stems
and yes the light will be on unless you duct tape the sensor to the inside of the rim..
but that might not work as the sensor likely need to compare to outside pressure..

A neat trick is to put them all inside an 8 inch little tire from Lowes or Home Depot, pump it to 35psi and store it inside the car.

You can replace the sensors with regular stems and not have the low pressure light.

Have you actually done this? Where in the car would one store the tire?

I like the tire pressure monitor feature, and it was one of those little features that swayed me toward the XL7. Are they really that problematic? I am under warranty for a little over 1.5 years yet, but ended up buying one of these on ebay just in case and I plan to hold on to it in case I need it after my warranty expires.

BTW - the seller accepted my offer of $15 shipped.

No, I don't have problems with my TPMS and I have said before that I like the individual tire monitoring feature, it has helped me diagnose a nail in a specific tire. Even the single idiot light wouldn't have helped until it was too late.

The small tire can be stored wherever it fits, as long as it is inside the suv.

My brother changed the wheels of his SUV and he couldn't reuse the TPMS and needed a solution, the 8 inch tire whas what I found. He hates the idiot light on the dash.

Others suggested placing the sensors inside the spare tire but in the event you need the spare, the TPMS will be destroyed and you may hurt the spare too.

Cool Idea!! I think I'll try it. I really think that the problem with the valves is there is some kind of defect. They should not just fall apart in three years. I already discussed this with the dealer and they said how do we know you didn't damage them. Come on - one maybe but two - on opposite sides. No Way!

Have you had new tires put on? I do not know how these install, but it seems to make the most sense that if a tire installer didn't know what they were doing they could damage these or install them incorrectly.

I normally get my tires at Discount Tire and hope they know what they are doing with TPMS.

Hey All, sorry to revive an old thread but I wanted to add to the list of broken valve stems. I've had 3 break in exactly the same fashion and the fourth just broke tonight. When I called my dealer (Dennis Suzuki of Columbus Ohio "Stay Away from them!" They told me that it wasn't covered under any sort of warranty, not even the 36,000 bumper to bumper.

This also tends to be their standard answer. My suzuki has been terribly problematic. I can't wait to unload this thing!
