SX4 2006 UK model,5dr,1.6 petrol,5spd manual.
Hi,turned the ignition key and nothing happened, just silence. The lights, indicators, radio etc all work. The battery is new and fully charged.I've tried another fully charged battery, jump leads and battery pack without success.
All the fuses look ok.One of those square things near the fuses makes a whistling sound but stops when I pull it out.
No.3 in the pic.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

The square things are relays, the likelihood of a relay "whistling" is pretty low, buzzing & clicking is not unusual, but whistling is. When does the relay whistle - when the ignition is switched on or when the key is turned to start? You can swap relays around for testing, there should be one nearby with the same number that you can try, just remember to put them back where you got them from afterwards.

The diagrams I have for the 1.6 SX4 show a different fuse/relay layout, so I can't tell you which relay that is - the diagrams also don't show a relay in the starter circuit, on the manual transmission, the key switch is wired directly to the starter solenoid.

Do you know how the start system works? Do you have a test meter or test light? You need to confirm power from the switch is getting to the control terminal on the starter solenoid.

When I turn the key the relay whistles/squeals,when I take the relay out the noise stops.
I've substituted the noisy relay with another and that is noisy as well until pulled out.
I've got a manual so will look at that and try some of the starter motor tests tomorrow.
Whereabouts is the starter motor,is it easy to access?................thanks

Does the vehicle have an immobilizer ?

Is the ignition a key or does it work with a fob.
The immobilizer on an SX4 won't prevent the car from cranking, it inhibits injection and spark, as for the key part of the question - it's there in the thread starter's first post - "turned the ignition key and nothing happened"; it's there in the thread starter's second post - "when I turn the key."

When you have to ask where the starter motor is, I start to question whether you should be working on the vehicle yourself or not. I think it's a reasonable expectation for someone intending to work on a vehicle to know what the parts look like, and to have a rough idea of where to look for them. Starter motors are generally mounted low down on the side of the engine, near the transmission. Is it going to be easy to access, probably not.

On an M16 engined SX4 I expect the starter to be on the "back side" of the engine block, buried under the intake manifold - it might be easier to reach from underneath.

I asked because twice in the past month I have had calls reporting "Turned the key on", only to find there is a FOB involved..

I have also experienced Immob issues the inhibited all functions including cranking..

I seems your experiences do not cover all circumstances.. I prefer to ask rather than assume.

The ignition key is an ordinary key that was cut a few years ago and has been used since then.

I asked where the starter motor is located because it isn't visible from above.

As for my mechanical competence - I managed to remove a faulty alternator and install a new one about a month ago.
So,not quite as stupid as was suggested!

now "i" have same issue...
What car is that? model, year, trim, engine type, transmissison, AWD? odo reading, LOCAtion

IN order to help, we need to know:
Car type, year, trim, model, engine type, transmission, odo reading (specify miles or km) AWD?, LOCATION., all of that in your profile or/and signature so we know EACH time you post and we will not have to ask..
Otherwise, everything would be pure guessing and possibly irrelevant.

Many think that saying "my car" clearly carries the whole information for everyone around the globe. NO. an SX4 is NOT the same everywhere and for all year models. No! It can be a sedan or a hatchback, there are different trims with different options , year model, there are Taiwan, Hong-Kong variations, Maruti in India, even North American Japan built versions use so called Taiwan headlight circuit (using relays) ; Europe models were built in Hungary along the Fiat Sedici sibbling, LHD or RHD , 2WD or AWD, there are variations in engine type,(1,6,1,9D,2,0., 2D...) some have daylight running lights, some have not, tail light arrangement is different in Europe.; power steering can be electric or hydraulic ...conventional auto transmission or CVT, 5 or 6 speed manual, etc, etc. More, starting in 2014, Suzuki went with the S-Cross, a totally different car still carrying the SX4 label in some countries (Though Suzuki has totally dropped the SX4 label)......SO…without precise details about the car and location, replies can be irrelevant.

No assumption here, I have personal familiarity with the SX4,
@LMP, you apparently did not read @fordem claim.
