Suzuki Inoftainment system. I give up!

Hi All

I have recently bought second hand Suzuki Swift (2016) from a dealer. The Satnav is pretty useless, partly because it's so slow, and partly as it's incredibly out of date. I checked the settings and the maps appear to be from 2014, so around 9 years out of date.

Looking at the Garmin web site, they only support this system up until 2010 and will no longer provide any maps after that date. But at least, I suppose, that's 6 years later, so still better.

I understand the procedure is to insert an SD card into the unit and choose Settings/System/About/Update and it writes the version numbers into files on the SD card. Then you insert the SD card into a PC, run the Garmin software which can tell you what updates are available. You download them using your PC onto the SD card, bung the card into the system and it updates.

However, I bought an 8GB SD card as requested and formatted it as FAT32 as per the instructions. Then it was inserted into the system, I pressed Update and it says it can't write to the SD card. Bummer. I tried removing and reinserting the SD card, turning the system on and off with and without the SD card, but no joy.

So, in theory I can get 6 years of map updates, but in practice, nada.

I have a nice long chisel and a big hammer at home so when I get back, I might 'adjust' the system lol.

The next thing to do probably buy a phone holder and use my phone instead. The Infotainment system looks nice, but I guess it's an out-of-date pile of junk.

If anyone has any flashes of insight, I'd like to get the thing working properly, before the impending hammer and chisel adjustment :)

Cheers

Steve,
You can buy a map update from the guys at satnavishop.co.uk.
I've just bought an sd card for my 2016 Baleno and it works fine. Just simply swap the sd card in the front of the unit. At least it was for me with this Bosch unit (see photo)

Hi @ndf
Thanks very much for the info. I just checked out the site and in contrast with the Garmin site, it offers a 2022 map update which is pretty good. The cost is about 35 quid so not too bad.

I'll check in detail for the model number etc. and report back with any success.

I do like forums! :)

Hi All

Well, a little progress on this. The problem writing the Garmin info to the SD card was a dodgy SD card. I bought it from eBay and clearly, you don't get much for £2.79 lol. Anyway I bought another locally today which works just fine. The car system writes an XML file to the SD and this gave me bit of a clue as to the model number. I spent a little while searching for 'Suzuki Infotainment System' but couldn't find one that looks like mine.
According to the XML file, I have a Mawson Part No: 006-J0196-51.

Anyway after successfully writing the card, I popped it in my laptop and ran the Garmin update software. The map update is £69.99 lol. However, there was a free software update, so I chose that and saved it to the card.
The card was popped into the infotainment system and nothing happened. However, after turning off and back on again, it triggered the update. The whole thing took about 5 mins and the system rebooted a couple of times.
I've not checked the update yet, but will take a run later and check it out. Of course, the maps were the ones that Noah used in the Ark, but I've been on good 'ole eBay and there's lots of peeps selling them for around 20 quid.
I've emailed the seller to check it will work, and if he confirms, I'll buy that one.

And while I'm on a roll...... I'd like to update the firmware for the unit itself. Does anyone know where I can get the firmware for a Mawson 006-J0196-51? I'm retired IT guy and would like everything to be up to date.

Thanks for reading!

Well, another update lol. I asked the eBay seller if the update will work with my unit, providing him the name/model and his reply was "sorry I don't know" lol. Anyway, the image of the infotainment system on his page is the same as my unit so I asked him if the card he sells works with the unit that is pictured. He's not replied yet, but for 20 quid, i'll probably take a punt. I'm guessing for a product of this kind, there will be no refunds, but I'm guessing it would work.

I'll provide (yet another) update with any progress as it might help others in the same position.

Ok here's the last but one update. Are you asleep yet? :) The last eBay seller didn't seem to know much about what he was selling, but another did. He told me that I need the old SX4 red card, which was £19.99 and only goes up to 2021, but 2 years out of date is better than 9 lol.
I've ordered it and will post back any success/fail in case the info is helpful to anyone else, and will then stop banging on lol.

Hi All

Well, I'm all sorted and am a happy bunny now. The SD card arrived from eBay and works fine. I had a little fun with it, as there were no instructions. I inserted the card and expected it to say something like 'updating maps' but nada.
Anyway, after playing for a bit, it seems you leave the SD card in place, and the satnav uses that in preference to the internal maps.
Choosing settings/system/about/selecting a map shows the date of the map which was 2014 and now is 2021 with the card inserted.
Of course, this means I can't play media files using an SD card, but I'm not too bothered as I use my phone for music over Bluetooth.

I've order a phone holder from good 'ole eBay and am waiting for that to arrive. I'd also like to use my phone as a dash cam so will play with that.

I just took the swift into the garage to address a few snags and got chatting to the lady. She said the cost of infotainment systems updates were ridiculous from all manufacturers. She said Skoda was particularly bad. When the system gets far out of date, the whole thing fails to work, including the radio and you have to pay through the nose to update it. It really is sharp practice!

Anyway, thanks to all for commenting.

Cheers

Being completely unable to leave well alone, I'm now trying to get a manual and firmware for my system. I mentioned I found in the XML file the part number 006-J0196-51 . To verify this, I emailed satnavishop (mentioned above) and asked them what the model number was for the unit they had shown on their site next to the map update. This unit is exactly mine. Helpfully, they replied really quickly and confirmed it was, indeed a 006-J0196-51. So now I have the model number and I know it's correct.

A bit of googling found this site:

However, the instructions don't match my unit and the model number is nothing like any in the dropdown box, so no progress there. In a last ditch attempt, I've emailed Suzuki customer support on customerservices@suzuki.co.uk quoting the model number and asking for the firmware and user guide.
I've not read a lot of good things about Suzuki support, but wait and see if they reply, it's worth a go.

Well, that's it for now, I'll post up with any progress.

Well, I take it all back! I just checked my email and Suzuki CS has replied. The said the firmware was on the Garmin site here:

Garmin Product Updates

The firmware is free, and this was the first thing I did so it's updated to the latest.

They also included a PDF copy of the user manual. That was easy! I've attached it to the message in case anyone reading this has the same model as me. I'd lile to see how the voice control works:

"Hey! Find me the nearest kebab shop" :)
