I recently replaced my back door exterior handle. I heard that it is a common fault when it comes to GV.
I simply bought an exterior plastic handle at Ebay:

Then, I wanted to install it, and I didn't know where to begin, so I went out looking in the forum...
Finally I found this post, which was helpful and got me started.

What I really needed are some pictures, to verify that I'm doing right.
So, I took pictures of the process, I hope it'll help someone here...

This is the broken handle (Please, don't mind the dirty vehicle )

In order to replace the exterior handle we need to open the interior cover.
To do it, first unscrew the locking button:

Now, unscrew the interior handle screw:

To remove the interior handle, simply pull the lever, the handle will slide slightly to the right, now you can pull the interior handle out (use a flat head screwdriver or something).
Note: Be very very careful, because the interior handle has 3 plastic clips and you can break them (I broke mine for example ).

Good, Now we need to take the back door cover, it is being held using 12 clips, carefully pull the cover (be careful not to break the pins):

The stripped door:

Now, you will be able to see the screws that hold the exterior handle:

Simple open these screws. There are 2 more plastic clips that holds the exterior handle, if you have clips replacements you can break them, if not, try to carefully pull them out.

Done. The back door handle has successfully removed.

Good luck.

Dear all,

Does anyone know where I can buy the parts in the photos?
There are 4 red circles as the parts that I need.

Rear Door Handle
Yellow Screw holder
Vertical Rod on the lock
Horizontal Rod on the lock

Taiwanese Grand Vitara doesn't have the above parts.
If anyone know wherey I can buy the parts, please let me know, thank you very much..

First - you can get them from a Suzuki dealer - but expect to pay dearly - SouthWest Suzuki Motors is one place you can try.

I'd suggest trying to source them used, and since the vehicles in Taiwan don't carry them, that means used from another country - not very easy to do - try posting a want ad in the classified section.

Good luck with that, I've been trying to source used US style tail lights and an external handle assembly (the one with the number plate mount & light) for over a year now - I gave up and bought the tail lights new, and at this point I don't have much hope on the handle assembly.

BTW - you may also need the inner plastic panel - I don't think it's going to be as easy as cutting a hole in the one you have now.

Last thing - do you really need an interior handle there? It's not as if you're going to have someone sitting back there who needs to be getting in and out, is it? I believe the only reason it's fitted to US market vehicles is because of a legal requirement to have an interior trunk release

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I've already tried SouthWest Suzuki Motors before.
I also got some parts from there before. The service is very good.
But as TW style is similar to US, these back door parts seem to be available in Right side handle marketing, such as UK, AU...
I know these parts are unnecessary.. but my wish is to collect all of stardard accessories of Grand Vitara and enable the functions....
There is a parts dealer in UK who gave me a reply, I hope that he want to send the parst to Taiwan...

I'm not certain what "right side handle marketing" has to do with it - do you mean left hand drive & right hand drive?

Regardless of which side the steering wheel is on and where the vehicle was sold, the door handles are the same on all the vehicles - right side door handles are right side door handles, left side door handles are left side door handles, rear door handles are rear door handles - There are two different styles of rear door handle, but they are not specific to LHD or RHD vehicles - and not all RHD vehicles come with the interior handle on the rear door, I have RHD and no interior handle, and I've used rear door handle for the US vehicles, so I know it fits.

1GV which part of the conversion interests you - the addition of an interior handle?

Personally I don't see the need for the interior handle, but, I would like to "convert" the exterior handle on my GV - I have what I believe is the same style of rear end as Australia gets, with the number plate below the rear bumper, and would like to change that to what I think of as the US style, which has the number plate on the rear door and incorporates the number plate light into the exterior handle.

For me the need is to move the number plate, as I would like to replace the rear bumper with something a little more robust - but I'm reluctant to pay the new price for the parts, and have been unsuccessful in my attempts to source them used out of the US - I may just add white LEDs under the existing handle.

I believe you do an "unbreakable" handle, which if I'm right is just the moveable "center" portion that lifts to release the latch - is that the part you find breaks most? I bought my GV with the handle broken (both that piece and the outer "fixed" part) and the replacement has now broken, but this time, only the outer "fixed" part.

The first time around I used an aftermarket replacement off of ebay, and was rather disappointed with the quality, this time around I used SGP, but modified it slightly - it's a rather poor design and at least one part of the problem is the two piece pivot pin that allows it to flex when pulled - I now have a one piece pin in there and there is noticeably less flex, so hopefully this lasts longer.

Repairing the back door handle

Thank you for your guide and photos to replacing the rear door handle. They were extremely helpful.

I found that the cheap pattern read door handle was a bad fit so I repaired my broken one. First I glued the two parts together with Araldite Rapid. Once that had set I used fibre and epoxy resin on both sides of the handle to strengthen it. You have to be very carefull not to get the resin on any moving parts, I found it helpful to put insulatting tape around the outer part of the handle, finally spraying over with silk black. I know its not perfect but it seems strong enough and saves buying a new part.

I'll bet that replacement handle doesn't last a year...

When it breaks, get yourself an SGP (Suzuki Genuine Parts) replacement, and then disassemble the ebay handle - what you want is that long, one piece steel pivot pin - the SGP handle uses two separate pins and that allows it to flex which is why it breaks - replace the two pins with the single long one, and you'll never need to replace it again.

What make you say that fordem? - The Ebay handle installed on April 2010 and still in great shape (more than 4 years!!)

I think that there are some parts that should be genuine (sensors for example) - but for plastic handles - Ebay makes are great fit (the price difference is huge! you can buy dozen of Ebay handles in the price of a genuine one).

Grand Vitara Replace rear door handle tips

Having read all of the help here for this job I tackled the broken handle on my 2005 five door GV and thought it might help to post a couple of observations.
First the bit where you slide the inner handle to the right, this needs quite a firm push and a stiff wide blade is useful on the left edge ,with the addition of a screwdriver on the right hand edge to ease out the handle once the three clips are dis-engaged. Be firm but gentle and it should come , this bit nearly fooled me as I was too scared of breaking something on my first attempt.
Next the door panel clips: I found the outer ones fairly easy to undo ( there are 12 in all) but the ones across the middle I got out by using a very long screwdriver ( or a stiff flat bar), then shine a torch in at the ( now loose) right hand edge and undo each by getting your bar as close to each clip as possible and levering back. All of mine came away cleanly.
The three plastic clips on the outer handle can be dis-engaged by simply squeezing the inner lugs and then pushing the clip outwards.
Last, be very careful when peeling away the plastic lining over the wiring once inside. If you go easy and peel gently back the plastic can be re-stuck using the original mastic.
Go carefully at each stage and the job is quite straight forward.

Well mine never broke, but i did have to take it apart because it simply wouldnt open. I found that when i lock the vehicle using the power locks the problem persists. I found that by going to the drivers door and locking then re-unlocking using the power locks, i can then go back to the back door, and using my index finger push up on the small section up on the left inside of the handle, the part that activates the rod it will then open every time till i lock using the power locks. I hope this helps someone. It sounds a little complicated but isnt once you find the right spot to push.

Well,
I purchased one $35 aus. Took 2 weeks to arrive. Pretty simple install, though the 2 plastic lugs were too big to fit on the handle so I had to cut them down a bit.
Closed the door and first test to open it, the spring inside snapped out.
are they all this quality or did I just get unlucky?

2021 and I have just had to do this on my 2004 GV and finding your old post was invaluable! Sadly, even the word of forewarning of those pull catch moulded clip was not enough for 2 to break - there is just no way you can slide that forward enough to free otherwise. Anyway, all back together, although the aftermarket handle unit doesn't fit flush with the door panel and feels less sure than the old did before it gave out. Still £11.76 and 2 aggravated hours and it's done. Thanks.

Apart from the flimsy construction of the handle I think the reason they break is that
when it is locked and you pull it, it feels 'spongy' and like all you need to do
is pull it much harder. It does not feel like its locked. I'm on my second $8 one.
Both broken by someone else.
