Possible Head Gasket Issue

Hello all, recently I bought a 2000 W reg Suzuki Wagon R+ to learn to drive in. But sadly 39 miles down the road, the temperature gauge would fluctuate from hot to cold continuously. Around town it was fine temperature gauge didn't move at all, but as we got onto the motorway and did about 60-70mph we noticed it would get hot then cold and then hot again. We backed off speed and cruised at 55-60 and the temperature gauge stayed just below max. At this point, we pulled off to the side of the road and let the car cool down, and dare not drive it the remaining 70 miles back home.

RAC came out and said it had a blown head gasket as he had to fill it up with a couple litres of water. Weirdly it didn't have the creamy/mayo type goo on the oil gap and didn't smoke out of the exhaust. The only smoke came from the pulley side of the motor. Completely bewildered by the situation we had the car recovered to our local garage and await time to look into it.

The car as only done 83000 miles since new and has been previously owned by 2 older couples. The car is immaculate inside and out so we thought it would run like a dream but unfortunately, we were wrong.

If any of you have had any similar experiences any feedback would be greatly appreciated as I need the car for work.
