I have this question as well. My local Suzuki dealer in Shropshire claims that it is not possible to update the head unit map on the new 2024 Swift and that I should use Waze or Google Maps from my mobile device instead. I do use Waze which seems to work OK. However I do not believe that the head unit mapping cannot be regularly updated: I love my Suzuki but I have no faith in my dealer now.

I'll refrain from commenting on your loss of faith in the dealership, that's between you & them, but, that out of the way, I'll agree with the recommendation.

My "in-car-navigation" experience starts with Rand McNally (paper maps) in the 1980's and progresses through stand alone GPS systems to integrated NAV systems and for the last decade or so Google Maps, now via wireless Android Auto. Updated maps, or a lack thereof, have been a constant bugbear through most of this journey, up until I started using Google Maps, I no longer have the struggle that you are currently facing.

Google maps are updated far more frequently than any integrated Nav system will ever be, and without user intervention, mobile data usage is minimal, and whilst nice to have, not really necessary - you can use "downloaded" maps and keep those up to date when you have a WiFi connection. I've used Google Maps in the mountains along the California Coast in areas which have no cell service, it does require "pre-planning", but it's significantly less of a headache that having to purchase the map updates (that's right, they aren't free) and load them.

There are also added benefits, like traffic updates, road hazard updates and very convenient, you can sit at a computer, "pre-plan" your trip, and then upload it to the phone - try it...

I wanted to update my infotainment system for my Swift some time ago.

After diddling around, and being asked to pay around £80.00 for a 2 year old Garmin update, I went on eBay and bought an SD card from eBay, plugged it an and it works fine.

I have to leave the card inserted, which is no problem, but only cost me about a fiver.

The £80.00 charge from Garmin explains why nobody ever updates the maps! Mine were 9 years old when I started and found out when I came across a surprise traffic island!

I did my Garmin unit with a card off eBay but 2021 was the newest I could find (UK) and from what I've read there won't be any more.
It's a lot newer than that what it came with but still well out of date.

Obviously the data is out there, it just needs someone capable of doing it but possibly not worth their while.

Mine did load the updates so I could remove the card but not at the first attempt. Can't remember what I was doing wrong but it was definitely operator error.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Tomtom was big cheese some years ago as was in-car satnavs, but with the advent of mobile phone satnav apps, they are pretty much dead in the water. In my experience, Google maps is pretty good, with re-routing on jams, but mostly I use an Android app called Navmii which works very well.

How times change..... The biggest issue for me was to find a phone holder which would either stick to the screen or dashboard. Got there in the end with a holder bought from a motorway services. The only trailing issue is heat. I use a dashcam app and satnav app at the same time. If you add to this the heat coming in from the sun, sometimes the phone overheats, so I'll make a screen for the windscreen side of the phone from blackout curtain material.
