How to lock the rear diff?

Hey folks, today I have a question- How do I lock the rear differential of a 2000 2wd Tracker? I can't convert it to 4wd for now but if I can lock the rear differential I'd like to since I plan on offroading in it a little bit (nothing too serious).

I'm not sure if gearing is relevant but I'm not sure what it is, I guess whatever is stock on 'em.

Thanks!

Did you get it to run yet?

You can forget about converting to 4WD, and my suggestion would be sell it and get a 4WD, don't waste time or money trying to lock the rear end - unless you're planning on acquiring a second 4WD Tracker, that you're going to swap the parts over to, it's going to be exactly that - a waste of time and money.

You can weld the rear end, you can fit a lockright - if you can find one that fits, lockright says they have one, the folks who've tried it says it doesn't fit, and you can fit an ARB, although you might need to machine the ring gear to do so.

Hey yeah I've seen you on another forum. If I can just weld the rear end that's likely what I'll do since I'm a welder, however I don't know what exactly it is I need to weld. The only knowledge of cars and how they work I have came from rebuilding the engine, so basically just engine mechanics.

And on that note, no, it is not working yet. The fuel injectors still aren't firing. As you said, I'm pretty sure it's a bad connection somewhere. I just gotta chase it down; after sitting a few years I've found evidence of mice in the thing, so they may have damaged it. In that time I'm trying to figure out things I can do to make the whole 2WD thing a bit better though, since I do plan on leaving the pavement every now and then.

As for converting it to 4WD, I'm pretty dead set on doing it at some point in my life, I'm pretty attached to this Tracker; so I probably will end up getting a 4WD Tracker/Vitara junker to take parts off of.

A welded differential is also called a Lincoln locker, because of the red machines used to do the mod. It’s not reversible, and it will always be locked after that. I’m still trying to locate a Torsen rear diff, but it’s proving rather difficult.

Ya I did, in may, and been waiting for it since then. It disappeared into us customs and they are completely incompetent, the system is broken at minimum and corrupt is also a possibility. In any case, I’m still looking for one. I feel bad for the seller in Russia, they said they have sent many and never had a problem, but they are going to have to eat this one. eBay was also useless as usual. Thankfully PayPal allows 6mo for resolution.

there is only one paved road where i live , and i am a few mile up the mountain , so first i have to cross a sand wash then strait up a fairly steep hill ,all sand or clay or caliche ... in monsoon season the wash is bad , it gets cut down and full of large rocks an such ,,,,i also go off to look to play in other areas . not to say i havnt been stuck but it does well in the desert i do carry cable chains just in case
