front differential leaking

Help ! My front differential is leaking through the right axle seal. It has leaked before through the rear seal and got fixed. It is not much though and some will say it is just oil sweating. It's always with the front differential so after checking, I noticed its breather hose has a plastic cover on it. So that the hoses hole is closed. Should I remove this or is it there to stay. Do you have this breather hose from your front differential and is it closed or does it have a hole on its end ?

I had a leak from the front diff on mine, fixed under warranty, within 1000 miles, the diff was squealing like a banshee!!! I've now got a complete new diff under warranty, now I learn the rear is doing something similar, back to the dealership next week.

If its the same as mine the black cap is a breather cap. It's designed to let air in and out while stopping dust / dirt getting in. It won't be sealed.

I recently replaced the rear seal of the front diff under warranty too. But now the right axle seal on the same diff starts leaking. Anyone know the amount of work on replacing this seal ?

Is there any preventive maintainance we can do to avoid these seals leaking in the future ? I've heard of these oil additives that u can put in your diffs, that'll reseal leaking seals. Anyone have tried these ?

The leak was discovered during other non related warranty work, it was described to me as weeping.

The squealing and howling started about 1000 miles after the 'repair'. I drive about 1500 miles a monthso it started soon after. Because it was just before christmas, I drove the car another 1000 miles before the diff could be fitted and it quickly became untolerable.

did the workshop tell you why it started to squeal and whine ? Like how loud where these sounds ? Did they put enough oil in it after they serviced it ?

I asked the shop if this was a common fault in all GV's , they told me it has and will happen to all GV's. Now how is this for japanese reliability ?

How much did you pay to have the seal replaced the second time?

I've just noticed that mine is leaking now...

so how many hours of work do you think replacing a rightside axle seal on a left hand drive GV ? (I think my warranty just went out this january :( )

Last time I was in the shop my front diff was also weeping when the rear seal of the front diff went bad. The mechanics told me that it was drivable and no need to replace. They told me they don't replace those unless it was really dripping. And it would have gone through MOT checks here in Europe. I insisted on having it replaced on warranty and they did replace the rear seal with a new one with improvements from factory.

Thanks for the info, I'll let you know of any progress!

Which of the seals did you replace?

My main drive shaft seal is leaking. The one connecting the front diff to the centre diff/gear box. Is that the one you replaced?

Did you remove the diff from the car to do it, or did you do it while in position?
