Parts supplier sent one by mistake, which led me to wondering where it is supposed to be on the car ? Had a look this morning but can't see anything.

This statement is wrong in so many ways ...

First the IAC is the IDLE air control, not the intake air control, next there are many different types of idle air control, some are wax based purely mechanical devices with no electronics, some are solenoids, and yes, some are stepper motors, in similar fashion, there are many different types of stepper motor, and the vast majority of them have nothing to do with idle air control or even automotive usage.

The only Stepper motor mentioned in the FSM is for the EGR (I Ctrl+F'd "Stepper" in the whole document). What you say may be correct for other types of cars, but it's called a valve in this instance. Being a valve, it's either open or closed. I consulted the FSM and found I was wrong about the unseen sensor - it is the TPS (8) on the butterfly shaft. See pic;

Fordem, your statement is wrong in so many ways ...

First of all I know that the IAC is an 'idle air control' because it is in my post above. Are you blind or something?

Secondly I know that there are different types of stepper motor, why have you told me ? Just to be a pain ?

Thirdly I know that there are different types of idle air control, carburetter motorcycles for instance, the cold start circuit on VWs, most are stepper motors like the Ignis uses, that's why I stated stepper motor in my original post. Duh !
