Dash, HVAC and Shifter light bulb info...

Noticed something odd during this morning's commute. The light behind my AC/defroster/fan buttons started dimming, seemingly at random, and clicking when it dimmed. Got almost to work and realized that it was doing this whenever the nose of the 99 GV 2.5 V6 2WD 4 door was not into the sun. Whenever I turned and put the nose/dash into the morning sunlight, the light clicked and returned to regular brilliance. Soon as I turned away from the sun in the parking lot at work it clicked and dimmed again, so I got out and checked the running lights...which were on. All other lights, instruments function normally when it does this. So, wazzup with that? Is there a daytime/nighttime sensor somewhere? First time occurrence...or at least the first time I've noticed this. I purchased it used in July with 70K miles on the odometer, now the odometer is up to about 115K. Would this set a code? Perhaps I'll put the code reader on it this afternoon. Any input is welcome.

OK. I think that we may be able to put this bulb issue to rest. :)

From the Suzuki Parts Catalog for our model, there are indeed two bulbs listed.

#40 74513-63G00 Bulb (0.7W)

#41 74514-63G00 Bulb (0.6W)

Back lighting button bulb #40 and (what appears to be) slider / panel bulb #41?

Also of note is another recent question as to what bulb is used in the Auto Trans Selector Lever to illuminate the shift gear choice.

28180-65D10 Lamp ASSY, Illumination (bulb, short harness / socket and green cover)

28181-65D10 Bulb (12V, 1.7W) bulb only (Edit: corrected # on 9/3/14)

Get any of them on-line at:

Great thread gang. Thanks for the information. Both the HVAC control and gear selector lights have been out in our'01 XL7 for at least a year or two. Thanks to this information I just ordered the lights. Hopefully by this time next week it will be lit up again.

Does anybody have the dimensions of the gear selector light? I just got an email that the lights are on back order. I thought I might check out the Instrument Panel Gauge Dashboard Colored Led Bulbs Lights Lamps site for everything. Their prices look to be less than the Suzuki parts site and the shipping is definitely less.

From what I can tell, I need 97272-2C000, 79674-S3N-941 for the HVAC lights. Is that for both 40 and 41 or are they different?

Thanks,

Slightly different wattage stated for the HVAC, and we are not sure if BOTH are required or the specific (recorded) physical size of them.

#40 74513-63G00 Bulb (0.7W)

#41 74514-63G00 Bulb (0.6W)

We've discovered here that the #40 bulb shown (and its top position insertion point), lights up the unit as needed. #41 is still but a mystery bulb (or IS it a bulb need).

On the transmission selector bulb...you have a choice of just the bulb OR the harness section w/bulb. Did you ask about availability on both?

Which dealer source did you use? I have at least two I can give you.

I ordered from SuzukiCarParts.com. I was just checking Lehman Suzuki Parts Center which I saw posted earlier in the thread. Both sites come up blank when I search for just the bulb for the gear selector. They both seem to only be selling the complete assembly - bulb and housing ($14 for the assembly vs. $7 for the HVAC bulbs).

Somebody posted a link to this site earlier in the thread Instrument Panel Gauge Dashboard Colored Led Bulbs Lights Lamps. Their prices seem to be better but their numbering doesn't match the OEM Suzuki number schema. If I can get the match here, I'll cancel my original order and save a few bucks.

Thanks,

Man, what a royal PITA this job was. Taking the dash off etc was no big deal. Trying to get the HVAC unit out of the dash was a nightmare. What rocket scientist puts the screw tabs on the INSIDE instead of on the outside and then makes the unit slightly larger than the opening. At the end of the day, i have some broken plastic in order to get at the thing. I never did get it all the way out, just far enough to get to the top bulb. While I bought the mystery bulb, I didn't need it. I'm pretty sure it's for the temperature control and requires not only getting the entire unit out, but also disassembling it a bit in order to get to the wires an lights.
That link is where I found MY bulb needs / pic at. BUT! I see what may be the mystery bulb in another shot.

Covered in a green cot attached to a two-wire lead.

You are spot on Max. Here's a picture of the three bulbs I bought. One is the bulb for the HVAC switches, the little one is for the gear selector and the mystery bulb I believe is for the temperature control. It's the one with the wires.

This is where the gear selector bulb is located:

Hey, it works ;)

Of course, trying to get the console, 14 year old plastic, off and around the 4wd shifter resulted in cracked plastic.

Oh yeah, reassembly was don't via flashlight since some numbskull decided to take out a telephone pole and knock out the power.

Great info and pics! Thanks for providing. :)

The mystery bulb (harness w/bulb section) remains somewhat of a mystery as to location / replacement procedure I guess. Thankfully, it is the easier to get to the TOP bulb (that illuminates the HVAC buttons) that everyone seems to find at fault.

As far as removing the whole HVAC assembly, I accessed it rather easily by backing it up and then down into the empty radio cavity. There I could then attack the button bulb without any wire or cable disconnecting, with the unit still behind the dash.

Yeah, that's what I was trying but face plate on the outside is slightly larger than the opening. I ended up breaking a couple of the retaining tab openings trying to push it in. I was too frustrated at this point to take pictures to show you what I mean. My hand also didn't want to fit when I trued to unplug the second wiring harness. I was on a mission to get to the bulb but between that issue and power going out I decided to bag it.

The light also looks very similar to the ashtray light. The only difference, that I can tell anyway, is that the ashtray light doesn't have the green wrapper.

NOW I believe that the bulb shown on the two-wire harness is the ash tray bulb, which is normally affixed below the radio opening.

I've got my heater control unit completely removed at the moment and see no place THERE for it to be utilized.
I'll verify the wire harness colors against that above pic soon when I go back in.

I broke the code!

Verified a second Ventilation Control unit light bulb location! :)

It illuminates the lower portion of the front panel slider bar / lever area via the (shown) Lucite light bar within the unit.

Red / black leads, bulb with a green cot. Socket twisted / released and pulled out as shown here...

Requires the complete removal of the cluster and further disassembly via screwed-on black circuit board cover shown at the bottom of pic.

The bulbs...

On the left is the OE TOP bulb with green cot cover and socket (disassembled). It is discussed and part number identified early in this thread (74513-63G00), and illuminates the top row of HVAC buttons.

On the right is the lower slider bar bulb / cot. It is a standard bulb (OE 74514-63G00) which is also used for speedometer cluster illumination and the ashtray light. :)
A GE '74'
1999 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA 2.5L V6 Instrument Panel Light Bulb | RockAuto

Now the CENTER bulb is a replacement for the (left) OE style acquired off e-bay
and is a T4 Tall Neo Wedge LED bulb. Two for $2.80, Amber or Purple, free shipping.

I used the amber LED bulb with green cot added, but suggest using no cot for enhanced brightness. It works as is, but would make for a brighter display w/o the cot. The LED provides more of a beam projection than flood-like coverage. Placing something white inside the black plastic cover bottom would aid with reflection illumination too I'm sure.

In summary:
Note the easily missed info with regards to working just the button back-light bulb (of the two bulbs). IT is accessed from the atop the control unit. That limited access can be obtained after removing the radio and dropping the unit down into the remaining dash cavity and working the bulb socket from there, while still behind the dash. Or via the HVAC opening as well once pushed back into the dash void. That way you won't have to force the control out of the opening and remove the whole unit.

This top bulb operation won't fix the 2nd bulb which back-lights the remaining controls / sliders that requires whole unit removal and further disassembly.

Thanks again. You know it's funny...I had a 1999 GV as my first new car (loved that car), and that hvac panel that you posted just took me back 20 yrs....

The new thread with the later round style dash controls in discussion.

Hi ^_^.

So about the sliders bulb.
You can access it by disassembling the unit (just like Max posted above).

Or you can remove this transparent plastic bar (be careful not to break the plastic that holds it) and then pull the bulb out.
If you are afraid of breaking something then just do as Max said.

*The bulb does not have to be replaced with the socket. It can be taken out of it.

And i think it's the same bulb as the gear selector one.
And it's definitely the same bulb used in cluster (for small like P,R,N,D,2,L. and for hand brake and seatbelt symbol and oil pressure etc.).
