Are there any auto transmissions that can be swapped in that have more than 4 gears?

Has anyone found an auto gearbox with more than 4 gears that can replace the Grand Vitara auto's gearbox?

I'm hoping to find a box with at least six forward gears in the hope that with narrower gear spacings it will improve fuel efficiency by not causing the motor to rev so high before it changes up to the next gear.

Any thoughts or ideas or previous experience would be greatly appreciated.

Simple answer.
No. These motors love to rev and are not that efficient at low revs. They have been designed to meet the emissions regs in the market they are sold in.

If you manage to find one that fits, then you have the ECM, BCM, TCM & ABS modules to get talking and controlling it.

If I recall correctly, the 2.7s came with a five speed, but as 2013GV has pointed out, getting the electronics to "play nice" is where the real challenge lies.
