4WD Noise

Hey all.

First time poster here. I have a late 05 Grand Vitara 2.0 J20A Auto which is making what I believe is a drive train noise. I have recently had the transfer case replaced due to the mechanic dyno testing it on a two wheel dyno without following the correct procedure.

However I now have a problem where I am getting a whining/griding noise when I back off the accelerator and coast along, however if I put the car into 4HL the noise disappears completely.

Anyone have any ideas what might be the cause of this?

is the noise coming from the transfer case? or the front diff?
Almost sounds like an incorrectly set up transfer case (not shimmed or incorrect bearing clearances / endfloat) causing noise in coast. Does the noise disappear under load? or only in lock?
Considering they have replaced the transfer case, I'd be looking at that for a start

Depending on the model of transfer case (and i'm not sure what one your model has) if it has a "standard" type differential, its quite possible its got excessive backlash or incorrect clearances causing noise on the over run
