Hi guys, I have been a member for a while but have not been online for a while. I have a 07 vitara with 2ltr and thinking about wacking a turbo on and boosting it to 6-8psi. seen a few j20 turbos in other chassis but only one in a early mod vitara so prob be one of a kind....if anyone has any links would be great help.

thinking i will have the turbo high mounted to clear the aircon stuff and will have to re-route some of the fuel lines and vac lines and the vac tank but should be pretty do-able, will use aem piggy back ecu and some larger injectors to control fuel. turbo will be cheap china t3/t4 with smallish ar to keep spool time good and theres a guy in the states with cast manifolds for the j20 for pretty cheap

eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d?r

whats everyones thoughts, flame away....should have brought a v6 etc;)

It makes me happy, that there are people with a passion to do such modifications at this generation GV. The J20 engine has a history with tuning. I'm a member of a Suzuki-4x4 club with Turboed Jimnys and also older models. I turboed my J20 GV 2006 a couple of years ago. A specialist did the work. Car still need more attention than my wife, but I'm happy with the conversion. Car used for competitions and games. Overhere we have no off-roading other than on legal circuits.
with my compliments.

its all tig welded. yeah im pretty over it as is the missus as its her car. ha, should be fun once its finished tho something different not many others around with turbo. I have a xr6 turbo Ute with 500hp and has all custom piping I made so sorts hobby for me. I saw a 06 v6 vitara for $10k other week was thinking of buying it and putting gt35 on the stock v6 or maybe convert to rwd and do ls1 conversion and lowered with big rims, love these little Suzuki's now. new hoon laws makes it to risky to drive big hp cars on street. sleeper vitara is what ya need.

I heard it mentioned somewhere that the 2.7 V6 has fairly weak conrods, so if you would boost it, you need to replace them with forged ones before even getting started, or else you will need a fresh block in no time...

Sounds like a great idea though... I would love to do that to mine eventually...

No one would suspect a sleeper vit... hehe

yeah I for some info off sx4 forum since have the same j20a. its a good motor pretty much an sr20. hopefully can make 200hp with boost. next upgrade will be clutch I think.

Nice

What a legend, good work.

You might want to start looking for a replacement or at least get some prices on another 2.0 from a wrecker just in case you get a bit boost happy  they shouldn't be too much these days.

Do you have any knowledge on the j24b engines, internals, turbo/S.C suitability etc?

Pretty keen to get something going in the future, you're an inspiration.

All the best with your project! ;)

thanks. I'm only going to run 8psi, 10max for now because has 9.5 compression, when I move back to Brisbane and can get e85 will do tune on it and bit more power. engines are probably not to much these days. this motor comes in sx4 & some other fwd suzukis and they run 10psi for 200hp and don't have any problems. I don't know much about the jb24 I think it could just be a bored out j20 might share the same exhaust pattern so could get same manifold I did from us. another limiting factor is the plastic inlet manifold will prob look for earlier alloy one if up the boost. unless you can do a lot of the work will cost a fair bit. I have done everything myself parts have prob cost $2k+ I wish I had the jb24 bit more cc could run bigger turbo something like gt35 make 400hp:)

thought i would check out the sx4 forum where few guys did turbo conversion on the same motor

one i had been watching for a while just found out he had some trouble with lean condition and broke a piston, fun times

he was also running a bb turbo and spooling realy early i think which makes boost in closed loop so ecu is trying to stay at 14.7 and also running 14-15psi

got it all finished, went to put injectors in but didnt fit, were to long by about 10mm. so just have stock ones in atm and have adjusted the fuel with the aem. think i only have the 4psi spring in the wastegate so its not making a whole heap more power so stock injectors are fine for now. under boost afr is real lean so nice and safe for now. when first drove it everytime came on boost made real bad sound like real bad pinging. so pulled timing right back but still was doing it then after a few drives i realised it was the external wastegate screamer pipe. unmuffled exhaust, its so loud and cracks at about 3500 all the way to 6000. will have to plumb it back in its to loud for a family car.

heres some pics of the dump pipe i made

yeah its a bit ridiculous. got a flange from exhaust shop so when I have some days off will plumb it back into the exhaust system. want to put 2.5 or 3inch system on at some stage too release some more power. still looking for some injectors before I can wind the boost up and have some fun. new clutch will prob be next on the list

i did some data logging with the laptop, is running about 4-5psi and injectors are maxed out at 4500rpm and running about 130% at 6700rpm so taking it easy keeping it off boost till i get the injectors in, I brought some wrx blue tops which are 440cc and are what people use in the sx4 and other j20s so hopefully they fit. found a bleed tap in the shed so once get the injectors in will wind the boost upto 8-10psi and see how long the clutch lasts.

another short vid of incar run
07 suzuki grand vitara turbo screamer pipe testing - YouTube

found a bov in the shed so put that on too, not very loud on the low boost.

made another quick vid today doing some boostin in first and second

Congratulations on an impressive job. You sure built a wolf in sheep's clothing there. Will be keen to see how the running gear holds up to the extra torque and power. Are you going to run it over a dyno at any stage?

#47 ·
thanks, its pretty fun to drive. think would prob be on par with a v6 one since its abit laggy. don't think will have any problems with drive train not huge increase in power, was worried clutch might slip but going good. going to wind boost upto 10 when my boost gauge turns up. also need to tune it a bit under boost the afr is in the 10s. maybe when come back to Brisbane for visit will do a power run see what it makes, definitely take it down the 1/4. stock did 18.5@72mph hopefully goes bit quicker now

#48 ·
got the boost gauge, will fit it up when I get time but wont be putting any more boost in atm, clutch as started slipping in 3rd under boost, yay time for a new clutch. still hasn't even been tuned properly and already making enough power to kill the clutch.

#50 ·
what ratio diff do you have in it now? I'll check out the clutch place

#51 ·
put boost gauge on the vitara today, thought was only on 8psi. actually running 16psi. that's why the clutch only lasted a week.
surprised it hasn't blown up yet.

#53 ·
yeah waiting for email back from them. places here don't do any clutches for em only hd organic ones. its about 13psi but it spikes to 16psi then comes back to 13. prob spiking because clutch is slipping. yeah goes good pretty quick now

nah just stock, thinking about welding up the rear diff, pretty shit off road get 2 wheels off the ground and its all over. next mods will be 2inch lift, bash plates and maybe xrox front bar but will have to redesign my intercooler piping and intake but want to move intake it collects a lot of dust when offroad

few pics from the other day out doing some 4wding/1wheel front 1wheel back driving

Colorado in trouble

moulded the boost gauge cup into the steering cover
Image

gauge is black face one when off like the stock dash and colours match pretty good
Image

paint stripped the turbo back to bare, bit more factory look

this one just explains my user name, 338kw at the wheels, apparently fords are found on rubbish dumps

just did a 2000km round trip to Townsville, turbo setup was faultless. so much safer now for over taking road trains. because engine sits on 3000rpm at 100ks as soon as you give it a little gas its straight on boost and making power and wants to take off. fuel eco wasn't the best averaged 9k per ltr. I still have a dead o2 sensor and had to tune the car in open loop to around lambda so was a bit up and down but went good and china turbo didn't blow up.

almost put it on the 4wd dyno when out in Townsville but thought would wait till I get the new clutch and have tuned it 100%
