Starting Problems

I have a 1993 Suzuki Swift, 4 door sedan with a 1.3 L SOHC 4 cylinder engine.

Occasionally, maybe once a week, when I turn the key to the on position the dash lights (check engine, etc) do not come on and the car will not start. I then leave the key in the on position and maybe after 15 seconds the dash lights will come on, and I hear the fuel pump running I can turn the key and it will start right up.

Other times it may take several minutes until it will flash up the idiot lights and then allow the car to start.

Any suggestions or experience with this problem?

The car does have a factory alarm system on it and I am wondering if this may be disabling the fuel and ignition system?

Isn't it possibly just dirty battery poles making a bad contact? I always start with the simple stuff like checking/cleaning bad contacts before looking into the more advanced stuff like electronics, 90% of the time the problems originate here.

It could also be a bad ignition switch (try wiggling the key) or an ignition relay (locate the relay and tap it) on the way out.

Well I finally bought an ignition switch and installed it. Same problem!

When I was changing the ignition switch I had to include another wire in the switch harness. Well guess what, it was the alarm system. I have now removed the alarm from the starting circuit and the car is running great.
