The Russian catalog shows the breakdown of the parts - you may be able to determine if something is missing:

A lot more detail than in my manual. #9 is the broken part. Parts 12,13,14 are those I think might be missing, but I`ll go watch to see if they could be laying somewhere in the door.... As it was attached on the broken platic part from the handle(part #9) it could indeed still be in the door.....

It so cold today, I might be waiting tomorrow to work on it.....

 

My handle was broken when I got mine. The PO rigged a piece of thin cable, like throttle cable, to the opener-thing and all I had to do was pull the little cable to open the gate. I later got a handle from MDON40's donor truck (thanks again bro) and it was a super simple swap/fix.

 

When mine broke on me I did the same thing..just a thicker piece of wire coated with plastic ... Still in use. I'm a cheap @%@*^%$.

Thanks guys. However what I want to do is to find a cheap door at the scap yard for a temporary fix. As I dont have the inside door panel it will be a cheap way to get that piece to. Then next spring, when temprature is going to be way warmer I`m going to build a metal handle and a stronger mechanim.

When I`ll get it I`ll post pictures of every pièces so it could help someone in the future(even if it isn`tt a big job!).

 

Just as an aside, we had a poster some time ago that purposefully removed that tailgate panel, and used that area as storage for fluids, jumper cables, etc. At the time, I thought it was a brilliant idea.....

 

Hmm I like that idea too, Bex. Mine has no panel either. And as a side note to the side note, the panel from a convertible will not fit the tin top.

 

Not a bad idea to use that space. However as it`s cold here in winter the tailgate panel is useful to keep the inside warm. However a trap(kind of little door) in the pannel could really do the job. Furthermore, in summer when the top is out that area could be useful to hide some useful things(few Tools for exemple).

I`ll take a look at it for sure.

 

My panel is just made of cardboard....not normally considered a good 'insulating' material Unless of course, you have insulated the space in between? PINK insulation??
While the cardboard may protect a bit from drafts, I'm not sure that it really does more than that - and if you have the convertible (or any rust holes in your floorpan, like I do), heat is being lost from the cab anyway....

 

"While the cardboard may protect a bit from drafts" that is exactly to protect a coming draft when it`s really cold. it makes the habitacle of the Tracker a little longer to warm up without it. (when it`s between -15C to -30C)

Btw, hard top is not so bad in cold weather. Indeed my passager floor pan was letting some air coming but I added insulation so no air from there....

 

Hey guys, where do you pull that cable from ?! not by the hole where the handle was ?

 

Been awhile since I did mine... Take inside panel off and find the mechanism that opens tailgate attach wire and route to outside. If I recall correctly.

 

Ok I got it for the very temporary fix. When I was opening from the Inside of the truck I had to push up the rear gate latch. but, as it swings up and down, just about two inches on driver side you can pull it down. so it`s where I attached a wire.

I`ll have to wait 2 or 3 weeks before going to buy a used tailgate at the scrap yard so it`s going to be ok until then. When I`ll have that spare door, I`ll cut the Inside to take pictures of the mechanims in action.

It will be way easier to put those 40 lbs wood pellets bags by the tailgate And also to get my two dogs in by this door to.

I might even have time to build my metal tailgate handle by then...

That may hold for a while. If you come across a brake cable from an old bicycle or something, it will work long-term. The one that was on mine was just that. The guy left a two inch piece of the cable tube on the cable and made a loop on the end. That's the part sticking out on the outside. The plastic/rubber tube piece was left on there so you could pull the cable with your finger(s) and not have the cable cut into you. I believe you can buy that cable by the foot at hardware/home improvement stores. Then use a piece of rubber vac tubing inside the pull loop.

 

StreetKing, I just wanted a temporary set up as I`ll build a new metal handle tailgate, and the mechanism in which the spring is. It will be a lot more tougher than the set up it had first.

However, as for now, this temporary fix is going to be very useful.

 

I gotcha, bro. I just wanted to toss that idea in for the next guy that breaks a handle. Please get some pics when you get your new set-up.
