Since I bought my Tracker I can`t open my rear door from the outside(when hardtop is on). I`ve read many messages/articles saying that this part is kind of weak on Sidekick/Tracker.. I think it`s more problematic in cold area. I have to fix it as it would be sometimes very useful to be able put stuffs in the back of the Tracker by this door..
I took pictures , I`ll upload them in case it could be useful to someone someday...
I unscrewed the two bolts (from the Inside of the door), that are holding the tailgate handle. there`s a plastic and a metal part. The metal part is rusted and the plastic part is broken, so no wonder why it was impossible to open the door ! I also unscrewed (from Inside) the black plastic cover, on which light plate are attached.
In the workshop manual there`s not a lot of detail about it. there`s a piece of plastic, a part of the handle, that goes trough the metal door(in a hole). But I`m trying to find on which piece it`s attached(Inside the door). I might have a part missing.
I`ve read that some Sidekick owner built their own metal tailgate handle. I`ll probably go to buy a rear door at the scrap yard to be able to fix it. I`ll be able to take measurements of it and I`ll to be able to build one in metal and replace it later....
They said a good door is $50, I don`t need a nice one as long as the handle is working.....
Even if it`s not a big job, I`ll take other pictures of the installation. btw, just can`t wait my dog to get in the Tracker by the rear door instead of make dirty my seats !!! lol
