Oil Leak at Distributor Housing

Anyone run into this before? I haven't in any vehicle I've owned. At first I thought the leak was from the main seal, but luckily found it was from where the distributor attaches to the engine. How tough would this be to fix myself? Anything I need to look out for? I'm concerned about pulling the distributor and messing up the timing (and then winding up having to be towed to the garage). BTW, the vehicle is a '94 JX 16 valve Sidekick.

Ive not had my vitara long but Ive noticed this has been repaired by one of the previous owners with a bit of silicone. If you wanted to go the whole hog I guess you could get a new rocker cover gasket and (if they have them on these engines) a new cam seal. Check thou its not just a spill of oil caused when topping the oil up by a previous owner.

You nailed it, Nuzuki! I ran the engine and felt around and could not find a leak from that area, though the area was wet with oil. This whole thing started when Walmart put in someone else's oil drainplug...the plug leaked and spewed oil all over the trans. I replaced the plug and changed the oil myself, but noticed some leaking still. It was probably residual oil coming off the trans, plus a small amount I spilled. So I went from what I thought to be a main seal leak (a $450 repair job) to a distributor leak (as diagnosed by the trans shop) to nothing! Woohoo! Will be going on a 2,000 mile trip this week and happy to not have any worries.

put engine to TDC ( so in case something happens and you move crank)
mark the timing adj. screw at the base of dizzy bolt .
then mark the rotor to the body.

this oil ring fails all cars with orings on dizzy or CAS sensors on heads, because they use a crappy o-ring.
it bakes to death soon.
put vitons on mine. it will never fail.
leaks down back of tranny lick crazy.

have pn and dirt cheap source.
in JULY i posted this.
