Noise from engine at low RPM

Hi All,
I have a 2008 Grand Vitara 2.0L. The car has 140,000km, but the engine was replaced with one with unknown km from import.
I have this weird creaking noise when the engine starts, and then goes away, if I hold it at around 1000rpm, the noise is constant, and at higher RMPs I can't hear it.
I checked it myself with a stethoscope and the noise appears to be coming from the top of the engine, the valve area.

What could it be?

I'm quite worried, as it's already the 3rd engine I have on this car, I didn't realize Suzuki engines were so unreliable when I bought the car.

The 2l engine is quite reliable and with the correct engine oil schedule there should be no issues..

A good engine flush and then quality oil and best filter should clean the engine..

First engine died just 2 months after I bought the car (it had 130K km), due to sludge. Previous owner apparently didn't take care of it.
Bought an engine from import (used, couldn't get new).
Second engine lasted 2 weeks before it died in the middle of the road, horrible noise, probably timing chain. It was under warranty, so they didn't open it to see.
This is my third engine. Had it less than a year. It was clean when they installed it, I recently changed the oil to good quality oil, and original filter.

Still this noise at 1000-1100 rpm. I took it the mechanic, he said he doesn't know where this noise is coming from, but it's from inside the engine. I'm afraid to end up like the second engine. It's no longer under warranty.

I did an engine flush (liqui moly), changed the filter and put quality oil (Castrol Edge 5w30).
The noise is much weaker now, but it's still there, at 1100 RPM.
I'm afraid it might be a timing chain issue, is there anything else I can try, other than a very expensive timing chain replacement?

Without having heard the noise my bet is the timing chain, or tensioner. Mine behaved the same, noise was reduced with an oil change but soon got worse again. It was a rattling noise heard at certain rpms, especially at idle.

But the parts are cheap and the job isn't impossible either! I change mine easily in a weekend...

It's not a rattling noise, more like a squeaking noise, like a squeaking belt, but definitely coming from inside the engine, not the belt.
And regular oil change didn't make it go away ( I did an oil change only a month ago), only the flushing + oil change I did last week made it go away.

Did you just replace the tensioners? or the entire timing chain?
I got a quote for about $900 US for replacing the timing chain. I can't do that myself

That sounds like oil starvation, squeaking from the top end could be cam bearings. I would take an oil sample and send to lab for analysis.

Ok, I agree that the timing chain would not cause any squeaking. Can't really see what would cause that from inside the engine. A bearing that squeaks would be totally out of lubrication...

The belt tensioners can produce squeaking sounds, and can be hard to determine where it's coming from. But if it really helped with engine flushing that can't be it...

I have, at least I think so, the same issue with my 2.0 2007 GV.
When first starting engine it's really loud but then as the engine heats up it almost disappear.
Then when only idling there is a little noise still.
My suzukien dealer says not to worry, the car has new oil and so, and he says it's common in cold weather that the tensioner can make this sound due to its working with oil pressure and until it's fully pressurised will be making this kind of "noise".
The noise when warm, and idleling he think is the chain being a little loose due to the mileage (124000 km) and could be up for changeing sometime in the near future.
But one thing is clear, it's annoying once you have this sound in your ears.

I am mystified that you haven't tracked the noise yet..

Unmount the drive belts and hand spin the accessories..

The tensioners do not squeak, and if you are hearing a rattle, either the oil is too thick, the channels are plugged or chain is worn..

I have 245Kkm on mine and have no noise, using 5w30 syn..
I purchased it cheap 8yrs ago because it had a rattle, flushed and used good oil, rattle has not been present since.. (lack of maint and too heavy an oil)
