major tranny prob

my transmission wont shift... at all i dont know why.. 94 tracker 8v 1.6l

Hi, Can you manualy move the shifter into differant gears?
Can you manually move the shifter with engine off?
Can you start your tracker and shift from Park to Neutral.?

Need as much info as posible. Please discribe what happens when you turn key and then what..... is shifter frozen in one position?

i can go into gear, park but when it tries to shift it shoots up in rpms and redlines whitout shifting.

Sounds like you have extream trany band slipping .I don't believe that it is a set of worn bands, since worn is normally gradual. Sounds like the bands are slipping due to a sudden loss of trany fluid pressure.

possibly bad pump,bad converter,blocked fluid passage,

What happens if you start off in second gear?

Is there any trany fluid on the ground?

What condition is the trany fluid in? any descolration ,or unuasul oder , often burnt trany fluid smells like burning toast ( very bad)

ooh! i think i know the problem..... its an auto! j/k
the most likely cause would be the shift cable, but on the more pricey side grc also has a good idea. lets hope its just a cable

Most automatic transmissions act just like you're saying if they are starved for fluid. The fluid in your transmission does three jobs:

1. Lubricant - It's the oil for your transmission just like 10W30 is for your engine.
2. Coolant - It's the coolant for your transmission just like the Prestone is for your engine.
3. Hydraulic fluid - This is where it gets interesting. All the "gears" in your transmission are selected hydraulically. The valve body in there moves little pistons and actuators to engage and disengage various gears and clutches to conform to the gear it's supposed to be in at any given time. If there's not enough fluid, the hydraulic pump sucks in air and renders the entire hydraulic system inoperative. If there's plenty of fluid but there's a restriction on the intake of the hydraulic pump, it won't develop enough pressure to actuate those pistons and other components to their full potential and you'll get slippage.

The primary and most common reason for your symptoms is a clogged filter due to lack of maintenance. Most people still to this day think that automatic transmissions can go 100,000 miles without ever looking at them. Ain't gonna happen. Most manufacturers recommend 50K - 75K. I go with 30K or less. Complete fluid and filter change. And if you're driving a Mopar product? Shorten that interval down to 15K or less.

The next most common reason for your symptoms is lack of fluid. Meaning it doesn't have enough in there.

Last but not least is component failure, generally brought on by one of the above two symptoms.

First and foremost, drag it to a shop so someone can do a fluid and filter change on it. Don't bother with a flush. Not at this point. Not worth the extra cash if the transmission has been neglected to the point of component failure, you'll be polishing a turd. Do a filter and fluid change (yourself if you have a Hayne's manual, it's really not that hard) and get back to us.

If the symptoms go away, you dodged a very expensive bullet and all is good. If the symptoms improve but are still there, you're looking at some very expensive transmission work in your very near future. If the symptoms don't go away, you've got a decision to make as to whether the Zuk is worth the expense of replacing the transmission or not.

Oh, and check the shifter cable and the TV cable as well. If the TV cable is toast, DO NOT drive it. It's the quickest way to burn your tranny up if you do.

its not the cable i just took it off an it has no damage

Hi, Well I guess you know what the next step is.

Time to crawl under the old tracker and drain the trany and check your trany filter. When you take off the trany pan, there may be a magnit at the bottom of the pan. Check for any large metal filings. The small ones are normal.( will look like metal flake paint)

Now change the fillter and see what happens.

Don't forget to get a new trany pan gasket. and clean out bottom of trany pan.

Hope all goes well and its just filter.

id say i have not changed trans fluid or filter from any where between 70-100k miles? So maybe if i change fluid plus filter problem fixed?

Hi,

Know one can say fixed. BUT it is the place to start.

The filter and gasket are cheap and if it fixes the problem then Great. If not then you haven't spent your college fund and found out that it may be to expensive to repair. Also , it avoids the repair shop $50 bucks per hour and you did it your self. Its not unheard of for a shop to fix this sort of prob with just a new filter and give you an outrages bill for something that was never fixed.After all I know my self that I won't take apart the trany to see if they really did put in all the parts they claim.

So jack up that tracker , drop the pan and tell us what you see.
