Knocking noise over bumpy road - steering rack or something else?

I have a clunking noise on my 2011 Swift that I think is coming from the front left corner that is most noticeable when driving at low speeds (5 - 10mph) on a broken road surface.

It's the sort of noise that I'd usually associate with worn drop links however I disconnected one of these and it still does it.

Once at higher speeds it's not very noticeable but presumably this is just because it's drowned out by road noise

The lower arm ball joints and the track rod ends don't seem to have any play in them however with the car jacked up if I gently rock the left front wheel while holding it at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock there is a small clunk. There is no noise when holding it at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock which suggests it's not the wheel bearing.

There is no noise when doing this on the right front wheel.

The track rod appears to move in and out with the hub so my guess is that there is play in the inner rod end or in the rack itself.

A bit of internet searching also suggests that the bushing in the rack is a potential fault and the noise is the rack moving up inside the rack casing.

I've not removed the gaitor yet to check the bush or inner rod end but does anyone know on a 2011 Swift if the inner rod end and or the bushing can be replaced with the steering rack in situ?

I found this thread that says you can't do this on an earlier Swift as there is a locking pin that can't easily be removed with it in situ but I think they're different racks.

Alternatively any other suggestions of things to check.

These bushes are on Ebay and supposed to fit Steering Rack Bush Sleeve Rebuild Replacement For SUZUKI SWIFT MK6 MK7 IV SPLASH | eBay

I've also seen mention of the Hyundai part 56521-1H000 being suitable too.

Does anyone know if these fit at all?

Swift 2wd 1400 cc 5sp man 2011 NZ new,

I've been chasing a similar noise. so far i've replaced with new oem parts;
Both lower wishbones complete with ball joints and bushes.
Both struts including top mounts,
rh sway bar link,
Steering rack including inner tie rods,
and
removed front subframe and inspected for cracks and worn mounts
checked rear engine mount for condition and security
replaced front calipers as the slide pins had wear,
fitted aftermarket cushions under top strut mount top plate thate sits against the top of the strut hole.
the left hand sway bar link looks ok but will be replaced as soon as it arrives.

in Answer to your question the racks are relatively cheap and It doesnt look an easy task to repace the bushing on this model year.
cheers

@Beachlander ,
Oh wow, looks like you're having fun and games trying to find it then.

I think the rack is responsible for at least some of the noise on mine but as your list shows it could just be a combination of lots of other bits too. Top mounts would then be my next guess.

Interesting to know you think the rack bushing may be difficult to change in situ can the inner rod can be replaced easily enough?

When we have some better weather I'll have a better look at what needs to be done.

Good luck finding your problem and keep us posted.

Good morning, when you say, have I replaced all the moving parts??? Please be more specific.... a noise in the car that reaches the driver can come from many causes. When do you hear it??? How many kilometers do you have??? If you can give something more descriptive so I can help you..Be well,... George, engineer from Corinth, Greece...

Hello, so I have replaced the struts, springs, upper mounts&bearings, stabilizer links, stabilizer mounts to frame, lower control arm bushings&ball joints.

Steering rod parts feels solid, also the engine mounts. I'm sure thats nothing serious because I've inspected everything...too many times.

I've done my own car repairements about 20 years, but this is weird stuff.

Are you okay with the swingarms??? As for the engine mounts, the rear countershaft has two rubber shields on each side, these are a bit tricky,..... they look good but they may not be Don't despair, sometimes these sounds become ghosts.... To locate them requires patience and... sometimes luck...

I solved the problem today.

I changed the steerin rods and find out that there was play in the steering rack inner bushing. It was making the clunking noise!

It was too much trouble to take off the rack and rebuild It.

I manufactured extra bushing from nylon plate. I have a cnc-machine so It was very easy.

The bushing measurements is
Inner hole 23,1mm
Outer diameter 23,9mm
Thickness 7mm

I sanded the new bushing and locked It in with pipe and epoxy.
