I just bought a 2007 Suzuki XL7 and I have been getting a p0496 code which is a evap high purge flow faulty. I have changed the gas cap to an aftermarket one the p0496 stopped but I started to get a tighten gas cap messaged right away. So I went to the dealer and bought the OEM gas cap and I started to get the p0496 code again. I did an internet search on it and I found that it is the vapor canister purge solenoid, so I replaced that and cleared the code. About 20 miles later the light came back on with the same code p0496. I don't want to keep changeing out parts and the dealership service department here are not helping me at all. PS I just took a trip from Jacksonville FL to Seymour TN which is about 600 miles or so without the light comeing on at all. I need help to get this fixed. Any ideas will be appreciated.

when filling your tank, do you stop at the first click or you keep adding fuel? Remember to stop at the first click.

I had that problem and the dealer also ran a smoke leak test on the gas tank. They replaced the gas cap and I haven't had any problems in the last 3.5 years.

When the check for that code is run, the purge solenoid is commanded off (closed), and the vent solenoid is commanded closed. Fuel level has to be between 15-85%. Ran during cold start-up (ECT between 39-86* F).

If this code sets, it means the fuel tank pressure sensor has detected vacumn in the tank when there shouldn't be any. This means either the purge solenoid is leaking when closed, or the tank pressure sensor itself is at fault and giving a false reading to the PCM.

hi could this code cause the p0036 code to continue to show up as well?? because since i had the timing chain and tension replaced(by dealer),i instantly got check engine light and the trouble code was h02s bank1 sensor2,replaced it and still getting light. this electronics stuff is a huge hassel...cant we just drive, fill w gas, change oil, rotate tires and that be it??? sheesh!!!
