Although I have been driving, and servicing all my cars for many years, and I’ve owned quite a few…this is my first Suzuki… and my first SUV… So who better to ask than seasoned owners? It’s a sport model with an automatic and sunroof, black over black with 16” alloys.

As for background it was purchased a week ago, I managed to accumulate 1100 miles (mostly hwy) thus far; the mileage is excellent for this type of vehicle this early on.

Having read all the negative reviews about the rear door opening and lack of power, makes me wonder what they are talking about. I have no issue with the door, which happens to open the same way as the RAV, but no one complains because it’s a Toyota. As for the engine, it’s just fine! Plenty of power from a dead stop, all the way up to passing speeds. I’ve been taking very easy because it’s still new. I can only assume it will get smoother as it “breaks in”. My only gripe is the drum brakes, but then again, I won’t attempt any speed records with it.

As for service, I change the oil & filter between 3 to 4K and use Rotella 5/40 synthetic. Considering the GV spin on filter, I’ve already looked up the Bosch filter #... only the best! The filters get changed at least 10 to 15k before the manufacturer’s recommendation.

So here are my questions, in no order of importance…

Where is the fuel filter, if there is one, or is it part of the fuel pump in the tank?

How do I disable the DRL’S?

What is the oil capacity with filter? The owner’s manual indicates in Pints, which I converted to qts, if my math is of, should be just under 5.1 qts.

Any comments, suggestions/recommendations/pointers are welcome.

One more thing… every so often the engine develops what appears to be a “rod knock”. The noise comes from the bell-housing area, just under the fire wall. I checked the oil thus far and it appears to be at least a qt or so overfill, I’m guessing its “piston skirt slap” against too much oil. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks! ;)

Welcome! Rotella is a good choice. However you might want to consider going to a 5/30. I personally use Pennzoil Plat 5/30 with 6K mile changes. Engine is quite happy with it. 0 consumption between changes. Bosch oil filters also a good choice. Did you know that Bosch now owns Purolator? I use them and no issues.

Unfortunately the fuel filter is in the tank.

Seems there is no easy solution to disabling the DRL's. See this thread...

5 quarts with filter change.

Even though it sounds like it's coming from the rear of the engine it might be the serp belt tensioner. Common issue with the 2.7 motors. There's a TSB to cover it. Have the dealer check it.

Oh, and changing the oil filter is one of the worst out there. No room to get your hand in there and hot oil runs down your arm when it pops free from the base.

I just re-read what you wrote about the "knock". If the oil is indeed overfilled by that much you might want to consider changing it now. I changed the factory fill at 1300 miles. I went directly to synthetic oil. Put in a fresh fill and see if the knock goes away. If not have it investigated by the dealer.

I devoted some time Saturday with a friend and we found the source of the engine noise. Thankfully it is not an engine noise but a fuel evaporator purge valve which is located on the passenger side of the fire wall. Next weekend I have to take it off and see if its actually failed or sticking. If its not too expensive I'll go out and get one on my own and replace it. As for the oil, its not that bad, I removed about 1/2 qt... As for the belt, tensioner, pully's,etc, all is tight... nothing was loose!

All is well:D The most important part was accomplished... no visit to the dealer!:):):)

Thanks again for all the help! :D

Thanks for the feedback....

As for the oil, i'll change it as I've done with all my cars @ 1500 miles, with the obligatory switch to Rotella synthetic and the Bosch filter. I had no problems with the 40 weight, besides its summer and always pile on the highway miles, so more viscosity is good. Unless someone tells me that Suzuki's don't like 40 weight....

As for the "knock" noise, I can't tell how over full the motor is, but the oil level is almost 3/4 of an inch above the full mark... it can be a quart or more or less. If its that much more, I can only assume its piston skirt slap from the excess oil. I will visit the dealer to check on the tensioner issue. The production date on my car is 3/08. How long has this issue with the tensioner been around? Did Suzuki address the problem on the assembly line or will do they leave it up to the dealer to fix?

As for the DRL's I must find a way to disable them as it makes me nuts when the lights are always on! As for the fuel filter, I was hoping it wasn't in the tank...:mad::mad:

Once again, thanks for the feed back... look forward to hanging around here!

Sorry, I missed that post... which describes exactly what is happening with my motor. I will make an appointment asap with the dealer and present them with the document. I hope they will look into it as the production date on my car is 3/2008. If this failes back to my initial theory with the purge valve!

Fingers crossed... I hate visiting dealers:(:(

Hello again…

I dropped off the car this morning @ 8. I spoke to the service advisor and gave him the TSB for the knocking noise. He indicated that they see this problem on almost all of their Vitaras. Although the TSB indicates a Vin cutoff date, everyone of them needs this repair.

I got a call @ 9:30 this morning and was informed the tensioner(s) was replaced and its ready to go.

By Monday I’ll have accumulated 2000 miles and will change the oil some time next week. My buddies shop uses BOSCH filters exclusively. I got on Bosch’s site and their O/F # is 3404, which appears to be a new #. Does anyone have, by any chance, the old Bosch O/F #?

Once again, thanks to those who responded to my post and a big thank you to my dealer for their professionalism, courtesy and knowledge!

Happy motoring folks!
