Hi All,

I stopped at a petrol station and filled the tank after driving for 1 hour, when i turned the key the engine was juddering and no power when applying rev, felt like lack of fuel or flooding, left it sitting for 10 mins then tried again, started driving then after a few miles same thing happened whilst doing about 50 mph, stopped car, waited 15 mins and same again, was fine for a few miles until loss of power / fuel again, any ideas.

GV 2006 1.6 petrol owned for 10 years always reliable, never bro

ke down, checked with garage cctv to make sure the correct fuel was used...I filled the petrol right up to the brim, was this a mistake for evap ?

Regards,

Brian

Are you sure it was gasoline you pumped and not diesel? It may have come from a gas pump, but was it gasoline? I mention this because there was a recent case here where the fuel delivery truck filled the main gasoline tank with diesel and it took several days before the station owner caught it, after hundreds of vehicles failed.

If it was gasoline, then my best guess would be the new fuel was full of dirt and your fuel filter is now plugged and you're experiencing fuel starvation. You don't mention if the check engine light has come on.

If the fuel is dirty, you need to drain it from the tank, clean the tank and clean/replace the filter (which is inside the tank). Unfortunately, these are massive jobs that require removing both tanks from the vehicle, not something that is usually a DIY project.

Thanks for the reply, i will need to contact the filling station again to see if any other drivers had issues, I took the Vitara for a 20 minutes town drive last night and it ran smoothly, was not expecting that, I will be taking it again tonight to test again and on Thursday night I will try motorway run fingers crossed, searching the forum other potential issue could be 02 sensor cam sensor so may get this checked also.

no engine errors on dash

old mechanics trick, pour in a cup of methylated spirits into the tank, this will get rid of any water. I suspect you got a bad load of gas, and sitting overnight will allow the water to condense in the bottom of the tank leaving fresh fuel for the pickup to suck on instead of a water/fuel mix.

All,

seems to happen after a long drive, drove the vitara tonight on a 70 mile journey and was running great but aftrr free wheeling down a long hill this is when it happened, this also happened the other night after long journey then after free wheeling down a mega large hill, should i stop free wheeling, is this affecting the 02 sensor, im thinking maybe not contaminated petrol after all cos the garage was at the bottom of the hill i free wheeled down.

Seems to be totally fine on short journeys in town etc.

Don't know if this your problem, but here goes: i have a 3dr 06 1.6 gv that ran well with no issues.
One day i started having stuttering at idle or when driving close to idle revs. Stuttering would stop when revved then get bad again when idling later on it got so bad it would sometimes die at idle. Turned out i needed to clean the entrance for the intake plenum. To get to it start disassembling the plastic intake pipes until you reach a metal piece where you can see the throttle body valve. Around that flap on the inside of the pipe there was this black sutty stuff that i cleaned off. Just take care you don't drop any of that sut inside your engine hence you're way past the air filter at that point. Also use your head and don't drop paper towels in there. Best practice is to use a rag that is clean and doesn't leave lint everywhere.
