AT detent cable differences

I'm about to replace the detent cable in my 91 Tracker 4x4 AT 3speed.

The two common after market options are:

Dorman 04445 and ATP Y1174

When viewing photos of the two there seems to be a big difference at the end of the TV cable that hooks up to the throttle valve on the transmission.

If you look at the Dorman, it has the metal "ball" connection at the end of the cable which looks like the correct connection according to the photos I've seen and the Chilton manual.

The ATP Y1174 cable has a small metal "square" connection at the end of the cable.

My question is, would the ATP Y1174 work or is it too small that when pulled when accelerating that it will be pulled through the throttle valve?

Thanks in advance.

both dormans and ATP ecats are brain dead.... so that means the local stores too.

3/4 speed are different/
amazon shows no fit on the ..74
This product does not fit your 1991 Geo Tracker
o"really's shows Dor......45 fits.

there are 3 cables, 2 for 3speed, and yours is 89-91 fits, 92 dont fit.
nor does 4speed fit.
the problem is most stores selling it are clueless, due to poor cats.

i put clues here (lacking a good doorman/aTP catalog, makes this hard)
hard to find parts, some are very hard !

Suzuki sells it
Suzuki Parts - Suzuki Parts | OEM Suzuki Parts | Genuine Suzuki Parts

you need early 3speed tv cable.

They both use the same tranny, so it will be the same for both. It is far better to search for parts under Sidekick, which is much better supported than Tracker. We can give you the Sidekick factory part number for the cable, if you need this, so that your auto parts store can cross reference it.

Found this in another post

I believe this tranny is a Tracker 3speed Auto (awesome photo)

Rockauto shows ATP Y1174 detent cable for a 91 Sidekick (nothing for Tracker)

So if they are the same tranny - would ATP Y1174 work with the square metal in instead of the metal ball...just doesn't look like it.

I'm worried that the part from SW Suzuki will come back with the metal square end instead of the round ball. I'll just have to call them and find out.

what else? it IS GM , not suzuki,
ok i listed them all now 89-98 1.6 and 1.8L, on my page,

GM don't sell it and id bet this cable changes on different dates, GM and Suzuki ? just like clutches do, and my page shows that too.
the only way to get it (ecatalogs all 3 , suck)
take it to Oreillys and show and tell
or
Suzuki real. show and tell.

hit Control + F5 after loading to force refresh.

Very helpful as always. The Dorman part seems to be the correct one. I believe you are correct when you mention that the cable changes depending on vehicle date...round to square. I would bet that the small square are for models 91ish and up and earlier models used the round end.

actually i think GM does it totally different.
the suzuki is 100% clear. but not GM. (GM)
at cami
the build sheets for Suz, an GM are not the same. nor are the parts lists, same.
im sure this perplexes the aftermarket sellers, for sure their catalogs , show that
buy absence ! and total lack of clarity on this part. ATP cat shows, zero.!

Show and tell works, you have lots autostores in SD, why not walk in and show them.
and the reality of tranny swaps after 22 long years....
the only question is, at what year did GM change 3sp. type.
the suz, held till 1996. (89-95 same cable)

i checked the suz EPC for 3sp changes, in 1992 they went to GMF 3sp (french? mfg GM )
the only change related to the kick down (itself unchanged) is the main case changed
to dash 61A00 to 61A01 but the kick cable us shown unchanged.
your tranny has side plate showing exact 3sp, is it from GMF?

so best i can say is you got frenched.! LOL

op
when you sort this, please tell us.
I would bet that the small square are for models 91ish and up and earlier models used the round end.
92 up.

oops. just found a contradiction in the SUZ EPC (older 2004)
it shows 2 cables for 8v 2door.
on the TBI page, shows 15920-61A00 ( think now this is an error)
then on 3sp shifter page shows, detent cable, as 28250-61A50 is this the square end and is that french made? GMF?
making this hard is the EPC dont put all detent cables on one drawing. (can show up in 3 places)

i think the mystery is unfolding..

Update

Ok so I was able to remove the kickdown cable with out removing the trans. Took me about 20 mins. Most of the time was spent trying to pry out the cable end on the tranny side. A short flat head screwdriver did the trick and was able to have enough room to pry up on the cable to remove it from this housing. The protective sheathing around the metal outer cable was toast and was of course leaking through it.

I do have the ball end cable as suspected. I checked the GM plate on the tranny and it says made in France

On the cable parts itself:

Orielly's list the Pioneer and the Dorman cables mentioned, however they do not carry them, nor will they ever. It's also funny to note that they list these cables under "Fuel and Emissions" and for Suzuki only not Geo. Neither Dorman 04445 or Pioneer CA-1967 show either cable on their site.

I was able to find the Pioneer cable here:
CA-1967-PIONEER-DETENT CABLE

Everywhere I looked for the Dorman 04445 kept saying out of stock.

So I went with the OEM Suzuki part #1594061A00 (ordered today). I know 100% this will fit correctly with quality so I didn't mind spending the extra $$$.
