99 Swift spluttering & stalling - carburetor?

Pleeeeease help!

My 99 Swift has been intermittently coughing and spluttering, very badly - in fact so badly that if a fit takes it while driving the car gives great lurches and won't take off again, though the engine will restart.

The other day it died in the turning lane of a main suburban feeder at peak hour. The horror, the horror!

My feeling is that the carburetor is choked with muck, and that a new fuel filter is required, but when I went to do it I couldn't find the fuel filter to replace it, or the drain for the carburetor.

Can anyone help me out, or suggest any other reasons for this problem/possible solutions. I can't really afford to take it to a mechanic at the moment, and the only one I could feasibly get it to is a real rip-off merchant when it comes to single women.

I am pretty certain the problem isn't electrical.

Are you sure you have a carburated fuel system or injected? I don't think they made carburated fuel systems after 1996. I might be wrong...
Sounds like your fuel pump might be faulty. Do you have a check engine light? Also, if you wat to clean out your carb, go to walmart and get some carb cleaner there. Also, but gumount "Regain." Advance auto parts usually has a fuel filter for any car, check there for a fuel filter, but I don't think you need one. Check your fuel pump though, sounds like the culprit to me. ;)
