so i have a complete chasis out of a 88 s-10 blazer, 4.3, 5 speed trans, axels, drive shafts ect. my question for you guys is what will and wont bolt up? can i use the trackers lift kit if i have to use the blazer axels, will the tracker t-case bolt up to the 5 speed t-5, are there adapters for any of these things and where can i get them? ect ect. any help would be awesome, just want to be sure of what needs to be done when the tracker gets torn down.

Must say I wish that you had been driving a proper running Trackick prior to forming an opinion on it. A Trackick in limphome is not an indication of what a great little truck this is.

roll the cam 180 out and the damn thing will run
only 2 ways this happens if Disty is right.

the cam was timed wrong. (or its key sheared or was timed willy nilly or use the "I" marks and not The "E" marks.)
or
the crank key was sheared.
just because the mark aligns DONT MEAN shit.

look a the KEYS and the truth be know,
this post is an echo of 1000s made here. amazing as that is.

on all engines there is an order
the KEYS
the cogs
the marks.
and the disty timing

any other order, invites fail

that is the way it is.

i really wish you could have seen the mess i ended up with before i got it running, maybe then you would sit back and just say, oh holy shit maybe this guy does know about the hunk of crap motor in this particular tracker, im telling you, the "mechanic" that did the rebuild had a head that wasnt too far from his ass and shouldnt ever touch a wrench again, he turned a decent motor into a paper weight that still somehow runs, the walls are scored, crank has been machined so much that the bearings almost dont fit, timing was way off, harmonic wasnt ever torqued so it spun the timing key, cam is supposed to be new and is worn so much that it almost doesnt have any lobes, timing tensioner was welded back together, wiring was everywhere, starter hardly worked, valve cover was on backward causing it to leak, exaust has been cut to right behind the door, straight piped, so im sure the valves are burnt up, oil pump was shot, 2 quarts low on oil, and all this is after a rebuild less than 1500 miles ago? its a nickle and dime machine and just not worth it anymore, i could build all three of my 350s for around what the 1.6 would end up costing after parts and shipping costs, if you really want the oh so perfect 1.6 pay shipping and ill send it to you, its that worthless anymore. i am not saying that suzuki is a bad motor by any means, if i would have gotten a low mileage stock tracker im sure it would be different, but thats not the case, the only thing done correctly on my rig is the lift that was installed by calmini, other than that im afraid to see what else was riged internally with a welder to get a couple more miles. to tell you the truth, i am impressed with my tracker given what it is and whats left of it, but its just going to be cheaper to do the swap, i have no interest in trying to rebuild a motor that has been abused and will never run right again.

#44 ·
Actually, from all you say above, it is just a testament to these little engines that, with all the abuse, your engine continues to run. Previous owners can be a bugger.

i dont diagree, the biggest point i am trying to make is that its just not worth the money that it would take to make this one perfect again, the fact that it had the crap beat out of it and still runs as good as it does impresses me, just think its time for something new, and well the one buildable motor in a salvage yard that was left is already in my shed pulled apart, thats how i got the new crank and timing set up, so it is spare parts for if i need them in the bug, even just a new crank is almost $400 here so i wouldnt dare rebuild that one either honestly, it needs quite a bit, it was in a fire but still in good shape overall. i just figure for the time, effort and work going into a swap it might as well be something that i want vs what is right.

Ah, see if this had been known at the beginning, much misunderstanding could have been avoided. Makes much more sense now.....

not being rude bex, you are pretty cool, but why would it make a difference on why i want to do the swap? even if its just preference i just wanted some possible pointers thats all. believe me if it was a strong motor with even half the miles, i wouldnt do a swap, they honestly suck to do, but when its all done its nice to reap the benifits, right? my uncle had an old cj and got a lot of crap when he wanted to do a 238 buick v6 swap, but when he got it done it would climb a tree and everyone wanted to buy it after that, same people that gave him crap. its not just to be power hungry, it ease of part finding and a fresh start, i love the wheel base on my tracker and thats why i want this swap done, never been able to turn on a dime quite like this thing does.

If your state won't allow you to cut and weld a frame, how are you going to do extensive mods to the suspension, steering and weld brackets to the frame, which might cause stress cracks? A reconstructed title seems to be a must either way. Ain't this vehicle supposed to be street legal?

#49 ·
the law states that you can not cut the frame to lengthen or shorten and weld beck together, you can nod the suspension and motor mounts, the law doesnt state that stipulation, as long as i dont cut the actual frame integrity there isnt a problem, technicly ANY modification to a vehichle, even putting in an aftermarket radio is still illegal in my state, but not inforced, they just havent re-writen the laws. the rig is old enough that in my area i dont have to do emmisions either so no one will probably ever know it is a swap.

the real question, is why are you here. ?
asking lil ol' Bex how to do a swap.

wasnt it you bog who said evertone is welcome to this forum? i didnt ask bex to tell me how to do it, just took the time to explain in better detail to bex because he wasnt so quick to shoot down my ideas and actually took into consideration that this may be the best idea for me given my circumstances. truth be told, i like this forum, maybe not a few of the members, but the forum can be insightfull at times.

#53 ·
Yes, lil ole bex notwithstanding, this is a great forum with lots of great information. I wish you good luck in your project. And yes, other forums like the zuwharrie forum etc., are more into mods, etc. This forum tends to concentrate on getting existing Trackicks to run as Trackicks. Ass-kissing a bit, as perhaps your 91 may have parts that my 91 needs!! (only kidding, you are too far away....:()

I'm a new guy from Indonesia
In my country there is a guy using a V8 engine (chevy) full performance........
But with that particular engine in his suzuki he'd never win anything...
In the end he go back using suzuki engine 2000cc injection and maing it to 4throttle with engine management MOTEC, and since than he'd never lose any race (off-road, or speed off-road). The builder told me: It is not how much power you can produce, but is the matter of how much power you can use perfectly.
So in that case V8 nor big cc is out of the question.....
Sorry if it's not what other want to hear.

not tyring to win anything, just want to be happier with my rig, we thought about a 350, but thats just plain out too much, i wish yall could see my favorite trail, then you may see why im sayin it just isnt enough with the 1.6 i think the 4.3 will be just abou perfect for the application.

#56 ·
If that's what you want/like..... just do it bro.... don't think too much....
I saw my friend done it wiith the small block V8 chevy..... You will never know until you try one...
ANd the more question coming out from you the more opinions willl come from others... in the end you will confuse and will never make one
Just do it and see the result... Good luck

smerf85, I wouldn't listen to those guys who think the tracker is perfect. I think those guys don't offroad on any hard trails. if they did they too would have modded their suzuki! there are no perfect vehicles that will do all you ask unless you build/modify it to do so. I too am gearing up for a 4.3/700r4/underdrive/dana 300/ scout axles. THEN it will be perfect! might not get the same mileage but it will do everything else I will ask of it ( like passing going up hill!) and driving the B.C. mountains at highway speed!

#58 ·
Yes, I am fairly sure that smerf85 (last post: 08-05-2011, 09:18 PM) has been waiting for your response.

And yes, no mass manufactured vehicle is going to be "perfect" for all uses. But changes to a "well designed" vehicle for one use, will make it "less well designed" for most the other uses. Many of the posters on the net are trying to give other the advantage of experiences. Something about a smart man learns from his mistakes. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others. ;)

Advice given on the Internet, while quite often valuable, sometimes isn't worth what you gave for it. (nothing.)

-- your rig.
-- your money.
-- your time. Do what you want.

if I read the original post correct, I dont see anywhere where he asked if people liked his choice. I welcome any comments from your personal experience where you built a sidekick like mine or his and where there is a loss of well designed use? I am pretty sure as I stated the only area of loss will be fuel economy and I am ok with that!

There is a guy on the forum swapping a ford 302 in a tracker. You should check that thread out.
