Hi all!
Steering is kinda stiff on my Sz3 2010/11. Used to be extremely light however is still drivable. No warning lights and regular OBD2 hasn't picked this up, however, this has been uncovered a few weeks on:
"EPS (ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING) 1 PROBLEMS EXIST"

1.C1122 FR RH IN ABS SOL

"CURRENT MALFUNCTION"

Does anyone understand what it means? I've been advised to go to Suzuki specialists.

Just remember, not all OBD readers will read all the modules in the car. You do need a reasonable quality one to read the ABS and the EPS modules.

  • C1122 is an engiine speed signal failure, speed over 50 kph and engine revs under 220
Time to get it diagnosed, can be connections, the EPS control module, or a broken wire. Off to a reputable Suzuki service agent or a diagnostician.
Pics below are from the 2009 year, just check the colours and pins, they should be the same. Diagnostic procedure is the same however across the range.

Hi, thank you for the help. Strangely my speedometer is working perfectly though. I understand what you're saying, but how does this module affect the power steering? (Sorry if it's a silly question, I'm just trying to understand.) I really appreciate the help! :)

EPS is the Electric Power Steering module and is attached to the steering rack along with the gearbox, assistance motor, associated clutches and torque sensors. It receives a signal for engine revolutions and vehicle speed to determine how much assistance to provide when the torque sensors detect you turning the wheel and how fast and how forcefully you are swinging on it too. In this case its not seeing ENGINE speed (rpm) and has nothing to do with your speedo.

Your code is a C1122, the second code down in the DTC list I posted earlier

So, even tho your rev counter may be working, the steering controller is not seeing the signal. This signal is sent to the EPS module from the engine ECM.
Causes can be a wiring issue, dirty plug connections,or the module itself. No ir intermittent signal it shuts off the EPS assistance which is why the steering feels heavy.
what the abbreviations are
EPS Electric power Steering
ECM Engine control module
VSS Vehicle Speed Sensor (this can be from the transmission or wheel speed sensors depending on models, usually the transmission output shaft.)

Hope this helps explain things a bit better.

Thank you, you have helped a lot!! I cannot explain the steering feel. It just feels as if it is dragging on something. Only slightly but the change is there. Do you think Suzuki could determine this issue fast? Given they already have a pointer in the right direction. The local dealership is £96 GBP per hour. So I'm really worried about spending a fortune just determining the problem. I also hope it will not only be easily determined but a not too costly fix.

The attached file is what the local mechanic found thus far. He has said to go to Suzuki because apparently they have more precise tech equipment.

Martin.

Hello Martin and other suzuki owners :)
I noticed your steering problem and my spouses sx4 has same issues.
Stiff and irritating steering wheel.
Lower speeds the steering wheel works fine, but problems start around 80kph.
Our mechanic found codes c1121 and c1122 and he wasn't sure what is the main cause of the problem and told us to ask suzuki dealer for more help.
Did you ever managed to solve the problem?

I apreciate every answer :)

C1122 is either an ABS solenoid, or the speed sensor input into the steering module. Suzuki use this code for 2 different things depending on the vehicle.
In the Swifts its the steering, in most other cars it is the abs. this is why mechanics get confused and the "generic" scantool code pops out an ABS solenoid RF statement.
This is why I posted the page from the FSM with all the C11xx codes

Hi Martin, may I know how you resolved the stiff steering wheel problem? Im experiencing it now with my SX4. Thank you so much

You have either lazy or incompetent techs, they are just scanning and throwing up their arms in despair..

Find someone that will monitor the speed sensors in graph format, check for spikes and drop-outs.. confirm good power and grounds to the modules, scan the network for poor signal (digital)

They should bring up a code as they are part of the self test for correct supply's
