what are symptoms.? loss of power, exhaust burping in to coolant overfill bottle?
over heating?

top hose is 150f and bottom is 100. IIRC . OTTOMH.
flow, goes top to bottom, rad cools liquid comes out bottom colder. that be goo.

head bolt sequense and torque



no noticeable loss of power, I am pretty sure the exhaust burped into the overfill bottle only did this once, since then I add antifreez when needed to keep it full and that is almost after every trip.
The bottom hose was cold so i changed the t stat now better.

I did run the car a few days without a T stat seemed to help didnt use much coolant. Thanks , Rich

oh yah, its a timing belt.

see my timing belt page. (1.8L is chain, as is 2.0L .....etc.)
did you notice my Signature has a link yet?

if it aint dripping green then its eating it .
if it is then the head needs service. ( or worse)

if you pull the head , please follow the stage down and up on the head bolts.
both the head and cam are all staged bolts,
consider a new bolt set for head. Napa has a nice set of ext. hex bolts (non allen)
nice upgrade. and old bolts ,lack elastic nature , and usually the cause of all this.
unless overheated, which is top cause. or freeze damage.
think about why it failed, this will help correct the primary fail point.
No freeze protection.
old hoses and belts.
old head bolts.

the using a steel rule make sure the head is not warped.
criss cross the ruler 2 times. with feeler guages check for warp.
on 8v 94 the feeler max gap is:

page 6a1-28
max = .002" TWO THOU max.

using the same criss cross method , check both manifold surfaces.
max warp is .004.
then have head pressure checked.
id eye ball the cylinder with high powered light for cracks.

consider a oem or FELPRO gasket , no , noname Clone china headgaskets should ever be used.

Try a search for head bolts at Ack;'s FAQ (see link in signature) for tightening sequence and torque specs.

Try a search for timing belt or look through the '96 Tracker FSM project (direct link to the index: Ack's FAQ: Your 4X4 Portal To All Things Suzuki/Geo ) for the official teardown instructions.

I actually recommend NOT using the FSM for this. the FSM instructions assume that you are in the middle of an engine rebuild. It is not necessary to loosen the valve lash adjusters to change the timing belt! Just remove the belt and install a new one without disturbing the relative positions of the crank or camshaft.

...and for petey's sake, DON'T try to remove the crankshaft accessory pulley by loosening the big 17 mm crank bolt!. Remove the five smaller bolts that hold the accessory pulley to the crankshaft timing belt gear.

I understand staging when tightening ,but not removing .Doesnt one take the impact and off they come ???

why?, well , if loosen the bolts willy nilly , the head can warp. (may, will ,can,? no matter)
this is SOP on all aluminum heads, and no, not a SUZ thing.

you need to unlearn ImPACT.

It's motor ,not bumper bolts.

its aluminum not and iron 350 cubic v8.

google bad useage of impact wrenches.

the list is near infinate. A Great tool in the correct way.

this is like day 1 , weak 1 in any ASE class.
