Okay, bought my samurai for 1k, I knew it had problems like oil leak sand that good stuff. I got underneath it today and found out why the PO said the 4x4 don't work. Here is a pic of the front driveshaft. Any idea what it needs? I also looked at the trans and saw that the mounting bracket is broken, it's resting on that bar. I ordered the unbreakable trans mount from low range. I'm also in need of the steering bars, the drag link and I'm guessing the relay rod? It's all so loose. I've seen some on eBay but I'm worried I'll just end up buying another worn steering rod. How do people replace these? And finally, what are the options for rear seat belts. I desperately need to get something in there, it currently has nothing. Is there a replacement from another vehicle that will work? Or maybe a generic seat belt from jc Whitney? Thanks guys.

that looks like a totally destroyed pinion bearing - so badly destroyed that i am not sure if the case is saveable.

About the only thing you can do is remove the differntial and examine it for a damage report.

If the PO did not swap out the ring and pinion gears, you can replace it with a new (to you) stock Samurai differential from eBay or a local salvage yard. You may also be able to pick one up in the "parts wanted" area of one of the other Samurai forums like zuwharrie.bbs or zukikrawlers.com.

I hope that this helps!

Lol well that's not the news I was hoping for, I just ordered a wheel bearing kit from low country, should I wait to replace them until I get a third member? And do I need the whole case? Or can I just source the gears and all?

Yea that makes sense, I just sent those guys an email, hopefully they get back to me pretty quick. Now I've been researching on this whole loose steering issue. I replaced that rag joint eliminater part cause mine was torn so why not. But it's pretty obvious there is play in the steering box, I can grab the steering rod(from the column) and turn it almost 90 degrees and the rest of the steering rods won't turn. So I ordered a steering gear box. Now the tie rods are bad too, that have a lot of play in them also. You can replace the driver side but the other ones are built into the rods. I've seen used ones on eBay but nowhere else. Any idea where I can get one to fix this? I'm tryed looking everywhere( so you guys don't think I'm skipping the whole research deal lol).
