Guys,
I really hate doing this, but I have searched for a couple hours now and obviously I'm not searching correctly. I keep getting practically the same topics that are currently on the forum right now.
Anyway, I've been searching for info on the 1.3 to 1.6 swap since I'm seriously considering the 1.6 8V for my 94 Sami. I thought I read somewhere, unless I'm confusing it with something else I read, that the donor engine needs to come out of a 2WD rather than 4WD? I don't get why that would matter, but I also can't find where I thought I read that before. The local junkyard here has a 1.6 8V for $650 off a 4WD Tracker. Do is have to be 4WD, and do you think that's a little high priced? (I have no idea if junkyards take offers or just a fixed price.) I also think I'll go ahead and pick up the parts needed for the power steering add.
If anyone can clear that up for me, OR teach me what the heck I'm doing wrong with the search feature for future ref, that would be great.

i remember when you first signed up, you had alot of seperate threads, so I would say your doing alright now. ;)

It doesnt matter what the engine comes out of... with a 4x4 donor you have to use your sami tranny, but if you have a 2wd donor you can use the tranny and have a custom ds for the tc.

What he said ^^^^. If you really want to fit a Track/Kick gearbox then it needs to be 2WD but its not necessary and is a lot more work to fit. The Sammy gearbox is plenty strong enough, its just a little lower geared in the lower gears.

Scrap yards are usually negotiable in their prices. It doesn't hurt to make an offer, that's the quickest way to find out. $650 is a little high for a used engine if it has to be overhauled. A rebuilt long block will cost you about $1000-$1200 and a complete crate engine will be between $1300 and $2000.

Getting it rebuilt will run you about $500-$800 or DIY for around $300 if you don't have to have anything machined. Or you can just drop it in and hope it's in good shape.

I got a 1.8L complete engine with intake manifold, runners and throttlebody, exhaust including cats, power steering and complete AC system, starter motor, and the wiring harnes and ECU for $900 from my local scrapper and that was a little high.

That's good to know. I'm out here in the country, and I just can't imagine everyone is beating down the door of the junkyard for a Suzuki motor. Maybe a Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. Do I need to get the starter that comes on a 1.6, too? Or what do I def need? It's an 8V so I don't need wiring harness or ECU, correct? (Going into a 94 TBI).

Get the starter motor and alternator while you're there. The 1.3 starter will need grinding to fit and using the 1.6 alternator avoids problems with having different types of pulleys.

Do engines from the junkyard typically not come with the intake manifold? Or should I say, do I need to ask if it's included? If it's not, will the Sami intake not match up to the 1.6? And do I need to make sure it has the throttlebody as well, and lastly, what the heck are runners?:confused:

What you get with an engine usually depends on the seller and whether any bits from it have already been sold.
You could grab the 1.6 inlet and TBI if its available, I'm not sure how well matched it is to the 1.3 ECU though. I was assuming that you would use the 1.3 stuff, the inlet manifold fits but I recommend that you open out the ports to suit the 1.6 head. Runners are only used on MPI engines, you won't have any.

Would you recommend getting an ECU off a 1.6 as well? And if so, do the plugs all match up, or will I need to rewire stuff? I thought doing the 8v as opposed to the 16v was partly to avoid having to do all that ECU stuff, or having a new harness made? And I should probably just get the 1.6 intake to avoid extra work you mentioned with the ports.

Sorry for all the follow up questions, but I want to make sure I get the right stuff, and hopefully in just a couple trips to the junkyard. Thanks a bunch guys, this is very helpful to me.

I'm pretty sure that the wiring on the 1.6 is different so you're probably best sticking to using all the 1.3 stuff. The ports are pretty easy to open up, the ally cuts nicely, I think it took me about 20mins to do the 1.3 carb manifold. I'll post up some pics later.
