Hey guys - Just after a bit of advice regarding fitting a winch to my Jimny.

It's a 2003 model, factory std model with no mods done.

What i'm looking to find out is:

Which winch would you recommend to fit to the front of the Jimny

and

Any advice on the fitment? I'm assuming the bumper needs to be removed/modified?

Thanks in advance.

The bumper has to come off and a winch bumper installed. The factory bumper is just a flimsy piece of tin that you couldn't mount a butterfly to without bending it. The size of winch you get should depend on your application. If you're just using it to help pull yourself up and over obstacles you don't need a very large winch since your rig doesn't weigh more than One Ton. If you plan on using it for dragging yourself or others out of deep mud, then you would want a winch that was a little bigger.

OK thanks. I know you're in the states, but do you have any idea how much the whole thing would cost? I'm very unlikely to attempt it myself!

If you get a bumper designed for the suzuki then you shouldn't have a problem just removing the bumper cover and bolting up the new bumper. Bumpers that are generic or non-vehicle specific sometimes need mounting points modified or welded and that would not be within the scope of most driveway mechanics. Installing a winch on a bumper designed for a winch is pretty much a bolt on proceedure. Wiring is very basic as well and most winches come with wiring kits and step by step instalation instructions.

shrockworks makes a bumper for a little under $400 U.S. and it's a good quality product. I don't know if they ship internationally though. Calmini I'm pretty sure does ship international, and has a basic winch bumper for about 400 for their cheapest one. Also good quality, but not as well designed as the shrockworks bumper. A 2000lb winch will cost you around $80 U.S.

these are U.S. prices, I don't know what shipping would cost you or if they would charge you tarrifs or import fees.

OK thanks for your help - I'll have a look about to see if anything can be fabricated locally. I'd say shipping costs would be prohibitively high from anywhere outside the UK.

Cheers.

Neither Shrokworks or Calmini do a bumper for a Jimny. I would suggest Googling for Rhinoray, he makes very high quality winch bumpers for Suzuki. Alternatively I believe that the ARB bumper is imported into the UK by a couple of companies. I would recommend a 7000lb or higher rated winch.

Does your jimny have airbags? If so you need to get a bumper designed for this, i think ARB does one? A rule I read somewhere while i was researching winches was the winch should be at least 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle.
But I would take that as the very minimum, If say your vehicle weighed 1000kg, and you were stuck in bog or against a bank or rock, you now have 2000kg or more load on the winch for example.
And who says you only ever winch yourself out?
I was going to get a 6000lb winch for my Samurai, but ended up with an 8000lb. And im glad I did, ive used it about 10 or more times, but only twice have I pulled myself out. The other times were hilux, 70 series cruiser, VX cruisers, suzukis. Authough I have to be anchored to a tree or other vehicle, or ground anchor. I once had a Isuzu Bighorn and Landcruiser tied to the back bumper as anchors while winching a hilux, I pulled myself and the other 2 vehicles , thats 12 wheels locked up being dragged!

sorry, I didn't read the first post carefully enough. Rhino is right, Shrock and calmini Don't make bumpers for later model jimnys.

How about these guys? K.A.P. Suzuki 4x4 - Suzuki Jimny Trialling, Comp Safari or Pleasure.
they have a winch bumper for the jimny with an aluminum skid plate included for £250 + VAT.
I just logged in to paste a link to that very site!

Looks a good price. Not sure what "chassis mods" will involve, though.

I'll phone them later in the week.

I forgot about KAP, they are a long established Suzuki specialist with a lot of experience modifying Jimnys. Martin Lines who runs bigjimny.com has a KAP winch bumper on his vehicle, he would be a good bloke to talk to.
