I have searched for hours on here and can't find who it was, but I know at least one person on here has a dual electrical system. Dual alternators, dual batteries, a totally separate system. What I'm trying to figure out is how to wire the second system. Do you just hook the alternator to the battery and you're good? Other cars I've worked on needed the alternator and battery connected to other components in the electrical system, such as the computer, to be able to work. If this isn't the case here, and the voltage regulator is built in to the alternator, how do I know what alternators are like that? I'd like to just go to the junk yard and grab an alternator that looks good and hook it to a second battery. My saumurai originally had a/c, so it has an open area on the engine and an extra v-belt spot on the main engine pulley I could use...

It's going to depend on the alternator you get - some alternators are single wire - just the output connection to the battery, you can hook that up and that's the positive side separate, the negative side will always be common because they use the engine block as a connection.

There's no such thing as too many questions - but - there's also a wealth of information out there just waiting to be read.

Do a bit of research on your own and then ask questions ;)

Still hoping the person on here who said they have two separate electrical systems would jump in here and describe how their second system is set up...

I know There's guys on here running two batterys, but I don't think I've read about any of our members running two completely seperate systems (including alternators) I've seen articles on it over on pirate though. They just rig a second alternator over on the exhaust side of the engine and run a dual pulley on the crank. Second alt is usually hooked up for onboard welders so they don't need to rig it to a battery. (you have to disconnect the battery cable when welding anyway) Not much else you can run that would require 2 alternators. Most winches draw too much power under load to run straight off of an alternator, but that's what deep cycle batteries are for and you wouldn't need a seperate alternator to charge the second battery unless you winch a WHOLE LOT. Maybe if you had an onboard welder AND a winch you would want 2 batterys and 2 alternators, but whether you want to run the batterys off the same alternator or have the second alternator preform 2 dutys (charging the winch battery and welding) would depend on what kind of switching or conditioning mechanisms you want to install.
