Oil grade

Hello guys!
Wanted to start a new thread but recalled that there was one already made.
We all discussed about the "brand" we use, but does anyone know the grade
or oil specs we should consider in buying our engine oil?

I was only informed by fellow zuki drivers to use 20W-50 & to buy this brand.
But I found out in this thread that some are using 15W-40. My minivan model
is 1991 as per info from the seatbelt. Some of our Carrys are 1993 to 1999
model. I read from a brochure about engine oils that the older the cars are,
the higher the numbers (viscosity index) should be. Our climate is also one
factor for choosing oil, but I don't have the exact specs of oil to be used
in our Carrys/ Everys.

One question: On my previous three change oils, I used 20W-50. I will use
15W-40 on my next change oil, will it affect my engine performance badly?
Will it leak? (since the oil is thinner) Will my fuel efficiency increase? (due to
lesser friction/viscousity).

Before I was using Fuchs Titan 20W-50 but now I shifted to a cheaper
Helix Super (Shell) 20W-50. My fuel efficiency decreased from 14km/L to
only 11km/L. Of course some factors like proper tune up, spark plugs, fuel
filter / air filter change, extra wts on trunks are all being taken cared of.
But the change in consumption is big enough for me not to recognize.:(

Appreciate if you can share your views on this topic.

Thanks in advance.

Increased Fuel Efficiency

Welcome to the Club sir dodz, nice to hear from you. Maybe I will try to shift
to a lower viscosity oil at low temp., say 15W-50 & try to see what will
happen to my fuel consumption. By the way, before you use the 5W-50,
what multi grade oil are you using? 20W-50?

I read from the net that 5W-xx oil is used in cold regions where low viscosity
is needed to start the engine. Then for tropical countries like ours, we have
a slightly higher number (viscosity index). Then for new cars, they usually use
5W-40 (Shell Helix Ultra).

One more question: When you shifted to 5W-50, did you experience any of
the following . . .
1. oil leaks / oil loss
2. easy start up at early morning
3. noticeable increase in oil temperature at uphills or heavy traffic

Hope you could share your thoughts on this.

Thanks.

Thanks for the info, but considering the big range of viscosity of MOBIL
Fulsyn, how much does it cost (1 Gal. or 1Li container) ???

I checked Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40, it's about P2,400 (4 Li. container).
Havoline Fully Synthetic 5W-40, about P2,100 (4 Li. cont.)
Castrol Magnatec 10W-40, abt. P950 (4 Li. cont.)

Hey, has anybody here used Castrol Magnatec? How is it?
