When we got our 86 Samurai it leaked oil like crazy from the from front crank oil seal. I replaced the seal and not a drop of oil leaked for a while. Now that we put about 400 miles on it the leaks are back at full force. I think the main bearings are shot and the play is quickly eating up the oil seal.

I'm debating on rebuilding the stock motor or putting in a larger replacement. Want to stick to standard carburetor motor so I don't have smog problems in California.

Exactly what motors are drop in replacements? What year and model car motors that fit in Samurai? I think there is a 1.6 liter Geo motor that has about 25 more ponies than the stock 1.3 liter motor.

Has anyone tried those crate motors form Japan?

And advice on replacement vs rebuild is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

the 1.6L 8 valve motor out of a geo tracker, or a suzuki sidekick is a replacement using only a bell housing adapter that they sell on most suzuki sites, and an electronic fuel pump that you can get for 30 bucks at autozone. It will use the stock intake and carburetor, and the stock exhaust from your 1.3L engine. The smog tech won't know the difference and that's the way most people go for a quick easy and inexpensive swap.

Some people want to go fuel injected and use the 1.6L 16 valve motor out of the tracker/sidekick. That still bolts up to the trany using an adapter, but requires the wiring to be completely redone and uses the intake and exhaust from the donor vehicle as well. It's a much more complex swap, a bit more expensive, but more power.

There are enough rebuilt 1.6's and 1.3's around that I wouldn't bother with the crate imports. If you buy a used imported crate motor you should get it overhauled anyway since you don't know anything about the vehicle that it came off of.

Do you have a recommendation for a source(s) for the 1.6L 8V rebuilt motors? I'm guessing with the 1.6L I should be fine on power and if I wanted a little more, I could bolt on a Webber carb or something like that which is easily swapped out for smog testing?

BYW, what year Trakers and Sidekicks are compatible?

Someone here can comfirm or deny better than I can, but I almost bought a 94 Sidekick last week for the purpose of swapping but if I recall from the quick checking I did, I want to say it was after 92 that the Sidekicks went to 16V from the 8V. So verify that for yourself, but if you wanted 8V I'm pretty sure it was all the years before 92. I'm not sure what year the Sidekicks even went into production to start with though.

Wow, I'm surprised at how much places are charging for rebuilt Sammie motors. You can buy a rebuild kit for $250-350. The rebuilds seem to sell for about $1300-1500. So it appears those places are charing about $1,000 for the rebuild labor.

Hopefully I can find a 1.6 on a Tacker or Sidekick that is in good condition at a pick-a-part place for $200-$300 and just drop that in as it. Trying to keep this hobby cheap. Stinks that some of the larger wrecking yards don't inventory the cars they have, so it's a pain to find what you need.
