Looking at the local craigslist for my area (Kansas City), it seems people want way more than blue book, even for a stock vehicle. I'm willing to pay what they're worth if KBB is wrong, but I also don't want to get ripped off.

Here are 2 examples:

88 Suzuki Samurai
Price on this one is actually $4,000

And this one:
1986 suzuki samurai

I've saved a little over $2000 right now, is it reasonable to expect a Sammy in good condition for that money?

Hey there. I found my 1987 Zuk on eBay for 3100 bucks. Best money i've ever spent. Got it with a 2" shackle lift along with P235/75R15's. I put on a Weber carb with a high flow exhaust system (and cat). You should be able to find a rough one for about 2000 bucks but the price seems to be steaily rising. Try eBay, i think it may be one of your best options. Happy hunting!

Hi Matt! Both look like they could be a good deal, being a hunter I'm kinda partial to the camo '86 LOL. I don't know the prices in your area, supply and demand dictates that. Those prices would be reasonable here in the Houston, Tx area. Clean, mostly original and low miles woud mean the most to me. $2000 would buy one here that needs work and probably not road-worthy, off road only. as puddle jumper said, the location is going to determine the price. (I didn't even know they still listed these in KBB.) Usually when somone asks for anything over 5K then it's got a bunch of extras that they put into it and they want to recoupe some of their expenses. A stock unit in pristine shape shouldn't cost you more than 4 or 5K. The problem is you don't know what shape it's in without having a complete thorough vehicle inspection. You don't know if there's rust or bondo under that paint, you don't know if their was a blown headgasket that caused damage to the block or head or was a result of a dammaged block or head. You don't really know anything except that 60K on a 23 year old vehicle his highly questionable and shouldn't have required a complete engine overhaul. It looks pristine, but he just put in new seats and redid the interior and door pannels, so you don't know what condition it was in before that. If it was a towed rig that some old retired couple used for their arround town vehicle then it could be a great find. If it's not, then I'd low ball it by $1k and expect to put that into it in unforseen repairs.

Is it possible to have someone u kno go to the vehicle and eyeball it for u. Better do a test drive outside the driveway on some gravel.
Best to have an independent mechanically inclined 4x4 knowledgeable interested person evaluate it. Many shops have such an employee 4x4 qualified. Like said before in this forum, location and history make a HUGE difference in value. Ur own needs qualify it too. Used as a family d/d or fun weekend warrior off road, must influence what u will need/use/acquire.
A d/d for mid k's is understating what most of us would put our families in.
The same $ layout for a dedicated offroader could only be excused as a start.
Some of the pix of Sami offroad prepared 4x4s don't even show the 10k in the rig. Anyone who has been building a rig will tell u that u don't 'see' the value. Again if u cannot eyeball the rig with confidence about what u see...no real $ value can be affixed to those rigs. They could be a great start and they could hide a heartbreaking amount of damage/neglect/wear that will drain ur energy and bank account. If it cost a few bucks to have it checked out it is worth it. Above all remember they are selling it...why could be important. U are buying it...their honesty and urs could be miles apart. Been there, done that, got scars to prove it.

KBB is a joke when it comes to zooks. Put a running stock zook with no frills into the middle of a offroad event parking lot with a 'for sale' sign... you could probably get 3 times what KBB is claiming! Find the same zook in a big city where most 4x4's are full of chrome and never leave the curb, and you can get it for a song.

It's all in where you find it.

This Samurai is one owner, original miles of 60k, and has no rust. This car was sitting for many years without driving, however it was recently restored. Interior: the seats, door panels , and top are in good condition. The heater works, and 4x4 engages . Car was also mechanically restored, new fan clutch, new radiator, new head gasket, new timing belt and water pump, new oil pan gasket, new valve cover gasket, new distributor cap, wires, plugs. The engine did not have any sludge while doing the oil pan gasket, car does not have any rust, and it was painted camouflage which looks really nice on this Samurai.

make more sense now? those are original vinly convetible jx seats, not recovers! its a one owner, this one might be a cream puff ;)

Making me smile!!!

You guys are really making me smile. Two weeks ago I picked up my first Sammi for $1400 and I love it.



It runs great most everything works on it. I had to replace the thermostat and the heater cable slips, but other than that everything else works. It does need some new seats and a little bit of work on the inside. The biggest bonus was the guy gave me an extra new block; rebuilt head; used starter, alternator, transfer case, 4 drive shafts, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, 4 pistons, cam shaft, crank shaft and several other things.

To say I'm happy with it, it a major understatement :p

SWEET BABY JESUS! I HOPE WE AINT TALKING US DOLLARS! Seriously, he gave that samurai away!!! I bought a parts bucket hard(tin) top, paid $1500. Crank was broken, so needs a need engine!

Where are you located David? If you ever decide to sell down the road, you gotta give me a fair chance! :)

Your teasing me with that one pic of that beautiful hard top with original paint! post a bunch inside, outside, engine bay.... I can already see thats a damn cream puff, no rust, ect... I'm so jelous ;)

David... I see you are missing your wiper arms... watch out because those splines rust easily. Let me know if you need to source a set of them.

wow hoarder... a couple punctuation marks... makes a giant difference in how it reads. I would still low ball the guy just on principal of it being a used vehicle... but if that's the original interior and not reahpolstered I would be inclined to reach a much higher settling price than before.

as for DWCARR: DANG! That's like finding a sack of money! nice score!

Well here are some more pictures.... It needs some work, especially on the inside. Yes, it didn't have the wipers on it, because here in the Mojave Desert the wipers rot really, really quickly so that last owner had taken them off, however, I've replaced the blades and have them back on it now.

As far as the engine, it is 100% stock and doesn't burn any oil at all. The Speedo only shows about 65K miles on it, but I'm not sure if it is original or not. But I still have to detail the engine.



The interior is probably the biggest issue. It is missing the radio box and head liner and one of the door panels is missing the vinyl. The rear panels are not in it, but I have them. And the worst part are the seats, which really need to be replaced. One thing that I would like to get a hold of is an original OEM radio, but I haven't been able to find one...




If there is anything I should know about getting parts or what to or not to do in putting this thing back together I can use all the help I can get.

Good looking hard top! Head liner is 120 bucks new from suzuki, you can make you own for less than half. radio box is 38 bucks new, with the face plate. you can cut the face place and put any radio you like. The radio box also houses the cig lighter, which is 30 bucks new from suzuki.

check these out! I love them! never have to worry about water damage! :cool:

heheheh! Your not kidding!! I had to read it about three times, and after seeing the seat covers, I thought... hmmm those are original jx seats. Then I realized the lack of punctuation, and I edited it to make some sense of it! :eek:
