Had my Samurai being towed on the stinger of a towtruck. Transfer Case in neuteral, and the left rear wheel came off with the axle attached!
What holds the axle in?

It looked pretty worn at the bearing side (at wheel)

I'll repair both sides when I can get into it.

mines held on with happy thoughts and little pinch of pixy dust....

but for most people, it's held in the housing by the 4 bolts on the brake backing plate that bolt to the axel housing. If the backing plate comes off the axle can slide out.

when towing you should disconnect the drive shafts. The driveshafts spin when the wheels rotate, and even if it's in neutral, the transfer case output shaft is spinning with the drive shaft. Bumping and jarring can drop the T-case into gear and then the T-case input shaft is going to spin up the transmission output shaft. see where this is going? Samurai's are very common tow vehicles for motor homes since they are so small and light. The are also notorious for dropping into gear if the owner leaves the drive shafts connected. Only takes 5 minutes to unbolt the drive shaft.

Yeah, Happy Thought & pixie dust while I'm in a mud pit, but...

Thanks for your help. the manual I have isn't clear.

It looks like there's alot of wear at the, bearing race?, or maybe it spun a bearing.

Wheel, drum and shaft came out as one piece. The splined end looked unmolested except where it must have pogoed of the road.
Should I expect damage in the diff?

The bearing should be a tight fit in the axle housing.
The hole in the backing plate is much smaller than the bearing so either it came off with the axle, or the bearing wore through the backing plate....:huh:
Dont do what I did and fit a new bearing and retainer ring before remembering the backing plate goes on the axle first!

I'v heard so many differnt stories, I'm not sure what to belive. I'v heard if you dont put the tranny in 2nd gea while towing that you will burn up the engine, because it will start spinning? lol idk... :huh:

It looks like the bearing went. The brake assembly plate is attached to the axle housing.
Backing plate, axle shaft, drum and wheel came out as one.
I wish I knew then what I know now.
It would of been worth taking the time to disconnect the rear shaft!

when you put the samurai T-case in neutral it locks the front and rear outputs so if the rear drive shaft is turning both front and rear drive shafts are spinning, even with the front hubs unlocked. This puts a lot of extra drag on your towed vehicle since its's spinning both drive shafts, both diffs, and both axels. If you have a lifted zuk with bad front end vibration at higher speeds, this can really shake up your tcase. The Tcase input gears can and will turn even while in neutral. They won't turn with any significant force though, and the reason you tow in 2nd gear is to keep resistance against the transmission output so it isn't turned by small amount of torque coming from the tcase. 2nd gear is enough resistance to keep it from being spun by the T-case in neutral. Without resistance from the tranny in gear, the tcase input shaft can spin the tranny output shaft while the tranny is in neutral. This is bad because the input shaft from the engine has to be spinning to lubricate the tranny. If your just spinning the output shaft of the tranny, then it will not lubricate the bearings on the output shaft and the bearings will sieze up on you.
