Hi there,

I have fitted a 1.6L 8V Vitara engine on my Samurai, and replaced the intake manifold and throttle body with the Samurai manifold and weber carb. Now I found that I'm running too lean with this carb, and have decided to put back the original manifold and throttle body of the Vitara engine.

I have all the parts, the manifold, throttle body, and air ram, but I don't have the ECM. My engine is the G16A. I have tried to get the ECM from Trail Tough, but I don't know why they are not cooperating with me. They may be hesitating because I'm not inside the US, and they might suspect some differences in our engines and the US engines, I don't know why.

I know I need the ECM, a high pressure fuel pump, and a wiring harness. I think the ECM is simple enough to do the wiring at a skilled electrician without the need to purchase a whole harness. And the fuel pump is an easy buy from Lowrangeoffroad.com, but I am stuck with the ECM. I don't know where to get one.

Any help will be really appreciated.

I know this is not what you asked - but - your easiest way forward is to rejet the weber to suit the 1.6 engine.

Now - let's look at the original question - what ECU - ideally the one from what ever vehicle the engine came from, and yes, I suspect TrailTough may be hesitant to get involved, not so much because you're not in the US, but because there are sufficient differences between US vehicles and other market vehicles to make matters very challenging.

Trying to cobble together an engine management system with an ECU from the US, an intake manifold from where ever, a distributor from a carburetted 1.3 and then fabricating your own harness to link them all together is going to be immensly challenging.

Just as an example - your vehicle, being carburetted, presumably has no O2 sensor - a US ECU will require one, an Africa ECU will not, a UK ECU may or may not, depending on the year of manufacture.

At the very least you should consider sourcing the ECU, intake manifold including throttlebody & sensors, distributor & ignitor, and the wiring harness from a single source - the idea being to make sure that they are all compatible with one another, and hopefully the source can provide you with sufficient detail that you can locate the service documentation to match.

Your argument is totally convincing. To make the matters even more complicated, the engine I got is actually imported from Japan, and not scavenged from a local spec vehicle. It came without a ECU at all. And I don't even know of what year model it was pulled off.

It did come with an electronic fuel injection and a O2 sensor, actually.

Now, about rejetting ... how do I do that? And what jetting kit should I use?

You'll have to find someone who has used that weber on a 1.6 and ask what jets they used, and take that as a starting point - and it would be a lot better if you could find someone local with weber experience to help.

i run a empi racing carb on my 1.3 and it took a professional a hole day to be able to jet it out and its still not 100 percent right and thats at a dyno shop

You didn't say which weber you were using, but, a quick google turned up some posts from Ack of Ack's FAQ which indicate that he is running a 32/36 DGAV on a 1.6 8v - he might be able to point you in the right direction.

Local Weber experience is impossible; I think I'm the only Weber owner in the whole country.

You didn't say which weber you were using, but, a quick google turned up some posts from Ack of Ack's FAQ which indicate that he is running a 32/36 DGAV on a 1.6 8v - he might be able to point you in the right direction.
Yeah I know Ack, he is a member here. Yes, that's the exact same weber I'm using; the 32/36. I'll look it up on his site. Thanks for the help.

So now, where are the jets, and where's the fuel bowl? Please excuse my ignorance, as I'm completely lay when it comes to carbs.

My friend fordem is trying to point you in the right direction. Absorb it quickly and you will be the "only" experienced person for miles and miles around! For me the response is AAAAAAAIIIIIEEEEEE!!!! Good luck to you.

I'm no carb expert - but if you remove those four screws and the air filter base plate - you'll see another half dozen or so screws holding the top of the carburettor on - if you remove that you'll find what you're looking for.

I'm going to suggest that before proceeding you find yourself a good book on tuning the weber and make sure it covers the one you have - it will point out the locations of the various jets, etc.

One last thing - taking apart twin choke carbs is a fairly challenging task - lots of linkages and very fine retaining clips that seem to have a life of their own. I've done a few, but never a weber.
