Hi,

We just got a 2000 Grand Vitara that has been sitting for a couple of years. A few days ago we got the oil changed, and immediately after, the speedometer and odometer stopped working. We looked at pretty much everything, and all parts look fine.

This morning while I was driving it to work, the "service engine soon" light came on, and the speedometer and odometer started working.

We were going to get a new speed sensor....but....does it still need to be replaced?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Start by having the codes read - until you do that you don't know why the check engine light is on.

A defective VSS (or a loose connection) can cause the speedometer & odometer to stop working, and will also set a code in the ECU - if the code is for a defective VSS, I would clear it and drive the vehicle without replacing the sensor and see what happens.
