Hi.
How do i test that the variable length inlet manifold is working on our 2009 J20A SX4?
I cannot find any information on it.

I'm not the normal driver of this car in the family but although the engine revs freely it seems a little flat at the top end over about 4500 so thought to check the manifold is working correctly.

They do run off the peak of the torque curve at about 3500-4000 rpm depending on model and transmission configuration, so they will start to feel "flat" over 4500
Peak HP is about 6000 -6200

Its an auto but not the CVT. Its a standard 4 speed.
I drive a 3 litre 6 so perhaps I'm expecting a bit much from it. But its a great little car to punt around fast otherwise. Easy to place on the road and nicely planted. Perfect for my daughter.

yeah, the torque is nothing like the "6 Pack", keep it spinning tho and they are fun to drive. Designed as a round town car they aren't too bad in traffic, but run out of "puff" on the motorways.

Are there any quick and easy "performance" mods to J20A, like airfilter or removing some inlet restrictions etc.

I have a service happening tomorrow that involves the airfilter so was going to get a free flowing one anyway.

just don't fit a K&N one......these cars are designed for a specific restriction in the inlet matched to the MAF sensor, free flowing filters don't filter as well and cause issues. Not much you can do to get more power out of these things unless you want to sacrifice reliability and "driveability"

I have unfortunately seen the results of K&N and other brands of "free flowing" filters on cars that were fitted in the belief that they are "better" for the car. The only way to make them free flowing is to remove some of the filtering ability. I run them on my race cars, as thats what they are designed for, and they get cleaned and re-oiled between races. The paper filter replacements, in my opinion, are the same as OEM at best, and at worst may actually cause damage to your engine.
Standard OEM paper filters believe it or not, do not actually start filtering properly until they have about 5,000 miles on them. While I don't recommend fitting a free flowing one to a vehicle that is not going to be raced, you can of course do so if you wish.

While i would like to say there was a magic instant power fix available for the j20a motor, sadly these are designed for a purpose and the engineering is such that longevity and economy is the goal. The electronics are geared towards this as well.
While there are some out there that have managed to wring a bit more out of them, they don't last anywhere as long as they can if the basics are done.
Keep it clean, fresh fluids, check the plugs and leads/lances and while it will never be a stunning performer, it will keep on running.
