I see there's a new members' forum at the top, but I already have a question so I thought I'd come straight in to the tech forums. So here comes my first question!

I have a brand spankin' new Forenza sedan, base model with a manual trans. Less than 15 miles off the lot. The sticker claims 22 city, 30 hwy. This immediately struck me as odd, as my WRX gets exactly that many miles per gallon, and there's no reason a 235hp turbo should be making equal mileage to a 2 liter N/A motor on a lighter, more aerodynamic car.

The WRX gets about 340 miles on a 16 gallon tank, which means at half tank (8 gallons) I'm pushing about 160~180 miles. (21.25 MPG)

The Forenza is already closing in on 200 miles and I haven't hit half tank, yet the tank is smaller! With about 6 gallons used (judging by the fuel guage) and about 180 miles on the trip-o-meter, that means I'm getting just about 30 MPG under the same driving conditions. :confused:

So is the sticker way off, is the fuel guage way off, or is my math way off? I'm further confused by the fact that (as I understand it) new cars in their break-in periods get worse mileage.

The sticker is close, the guage (in my car anyways) is WAY off..heh

I usually get between 180 and 225 by the 1/2 mark. But that's not 1/2 TANK in my car. It's actually closer to 2/5. You get used to it after a while.

I've been averaging 27 mpg with mixed driving. Oh and mileage can vary WIDELY. It really doesn't have to do with HP, as much as engine EFFICIENCY. Our engines tend to run quite rich. There are ways around this however....

I would be willing to be that if one were to lean out the mixture a bunch (sacrificing power, of course) and perform a few other mods, that we could quite possibly get up to 40 mpg. Oddly, the dealer around here is advertising them at "up to 35 mpg". I wonder how many calls they get when people find out that's really stretching it.....lol

yeah I wasnt impressed with e the mpg i'm geting about 26 less then my BAPOS saab.
The dealer (rolling eyes here) said the mpg would go up as you drive the car(scratching head) some how I dont beleve that. the dealer has lyed and not called me when I order stuff or for warrnty work it took 2 weeks to fix the windsheald..... one of the sales man told me that I sould work there since I'm there every week for dumb shit that happens with the car.... they better not dick me around with the oil cange I'm geting this thirsday.
Sorry I'm venting, bad day at work.

I figured it out today with some freeway driving; it's a whacked fuel guage. I had more than 200 miles on the trip meter before the guage hit half, now I have 340 miles and the guage says I'm almost empty. :confused: What the heck is that all about? That means the first half of the tank I got more than 200 miles and the second half was worth less than 140...? Weak! It also means I'm making less than 25mpg highway!! I sure as hell hope the mileage improves with age.

Anyway, it's a fuel savings since I get to put regular in the Suzuki. So that's some consolation...

Well, there is some truth to this. Last year members spent quite a bit of time tracking and reporting mileage and many reported bad mileage until about 10,000 miles. I see high 30s regularly. Some of my mileage is in direct response to mods I have done on the car. I think the UD pulley has had the most effect. Driving a steady 60mph the car is loping along at less than 2500 rpm and barely sips the gas. The trade off to the mods is that when I do hammer on it the mileage drops dramaticly, I tracked it one day on a fast run upstate at about 15mpg. but that was a lot of 4krpm+ and many full throttle manuvers.
