I have a 1986 samurai stock. I have a leak at the rear output seal of the trans. I went to replace my trans fluid and tcase fluid, after I replaced the trans fluid, I turned her on and now there is a grinding noise with the trans in neutral that wasn't there before. It would whine at higher speeds, but now it's grinding in neutral with the clutch out. Did I cause this? Am I low on fluids? And is there any way to fix this without taking out the trans?? Please help me I need to fix this as it is my daily driver and I'm low on cash, any help is greatly appreciated

Are you low on fluids - YOU have to tell us - open the fill plug and check it.

It's grinding in neutral with the clutch out - you'll probably have to drop the transmission and split it to determine what the cause is. Did you cause it? Not by changing the fluids, but if you were running it low on fluid, you could have hastened it's demise. You might have contributed to it by not changing the fluid early enough, or maybe made it worse by not looking into the cause of the whine when you first heard it.

Sorry you're right that might have been a dumb question. When I replaced the fluids, I used the fill/check hole to fill the trans, as opposed to pouring it through the shifter. This being, because the previous owner jb-welded a different shifter arm, onto the shifter itself attached to the trans. So there's no flow. Could the whine before have been low fluids? And then when I replaced it, lower than before? Making this grinding noise more prominent in neutral? Because the grinding noise that I'm hearing now isn't necessarily loud, but it's there. I started it up to check and see if it was the same, and it was a little quieter when the oil was maybe warmed up and expanded a little bit? Just a thought.

I don't think I like where this is going - if you used the fill hole, as you are supposed to, what does the PO's JB weld have to do with correctly filling the transmission to the correct level ?

You're filling it the way you're supposed to - did you fill it to the right level?

Could the whine before have been low fluids - yes - the first thing to do with any transmission noise is to check the lubricant - remove the fill plug and see if lubricant dribbles, if it doesn't stick your pinky finger in and feel to see how far down the lube is, and if necessary top it up.

Is the level now lower than before - well - I know how much was there before.

I stated that the PO jb welded the top of the shifter to a new shifter lever for some odd reason. That stopped me from just pouring the trans fluid through the shifter. So I pumped the trans fluid through the check/fill hole. I pumped it until it was dribbling out and replaced the bolt. I pumped about a quart and a half which I've read is full capacity. I'm just confused as to why it's making more noise now that before.

Also, I found a small amount of metallic glitter in the old trans fluid when I was draining it

I've tried googling plenty things, I believe the cause to be the PO might have caused the whining issue from towing it improperly. He sold it to me with a tow-along kit, and also told me they drove it to their home through a couple states. I saw a post that read along the lines that the tcase locks the rear axle driveshaft, and the main driveshaft. Causing it to spin the transmission, doing damage to other parts especially over 55mph. Does this sound plausible?

I found a guy that has one rebuilt trans left, he said he can swap that in if its compatible, or he will do a whole rebuild. Either or for $800 out the door AND a 18 month unlimited mile warranty.. Said he would even pick it up for me 45 mins away..

This is a Free simple test so give it a try to be sure it's not the "Throw Out Bearing" just lightly press on the clutch just enough to get the free play out of the clutch pedal but not all the way down to disconnect the transmisiion and see if the noise stops...... If it does it's the "Throw Out Bearing"
