Hello everyone I'm looking for some advice, I've been hearing a whining noise at higher speeds while I'm going down the road. Usually 40 mph+ and mostly 4th and 5th gear. I thought this noise was coming from my transmission, and it still might be slightly. But today I tried something I read on a thread to diagnose a little further. I put the transfer case in neutral, and shifted through all 5 gears. 3rd gear there was a very very faint buzzing noise. Now 4th gear at a 1:1 ratio it started making a clunking sort of noise. I put it in 5th gear and it got louder. It gets louder with revs. I let it idle in 5th gear and put my head underneath, and it was a definite clinking/clunking noise coming from the tcase. My question is would anybody know what is going on and what would be the best way to go about solving my problems after I check fluid levels, and replace oil. I am almost certain I have a problem with my tcase now but I just want other opinions so I don't replace something I wouldn't need. Thanks everyone ;D

I would also like to add that my tcase was in neutral while it was making the clunking noise. I am not sure if this noise is associated with the same whining noise I hear while I'm driving down the road in 2H. Just a thought

Any help please?! My main question is that I am asking what this clunking clinking noise might be without splitting my tcase. I am going to check and replace the fluid tomorrow and check for any metal debris, but I would really like to know what might be causing the noise before hand. Again ill say its a 1.3 stock everything, it makes a whining noise going 40+ mph. I put the tcase in neutral, and it started making a clunking/clinking noise like metal was contactjng when it shouldnt. I am positive it was from the tcase, and that it was completely in neutral. It didn't make this noise up until the same revs in the same gears from 3rd to 5th gear. I would like to diagnose and possibly repair my u-joints as well as a precautionary thing but money is incredibly tight for me right now, and any help is appreciated so I don't spend time or money on something that wasn't necessary.. Thanks any help is greatly appreciated

I have noticed that my ride does this very same thing. Lately since it's been colder and while it's cold I hear a rattle in my t-case. Then later after I've reamed it a bit I hear only a low pitched noise.... Right now I can't test it in neutral cause of my shifter sheet bushing in the t-case is shot.... I have an idea though that the input shaft bearing my be on the outs. Reason for this is that my mini-jeep Has only 30000 on the od and I know for fact that It has been in low-lock for the last ten years. It had 33 thornbirds that were wore slick put on brand new.... I will shortly swap it with a t-case that i wheeled and dealed for and i'll try to let you know how that fairs

So you're saying you hear the noise while you're moving? Best way I've found to diagnose the noise to a specific component is putting the tcase in neutral and on jack stands. The noise I hear sounds similar to marbles rolling around in there, does that sound familiar?

It' exactly like that. Sorta like marbles rattling in a jar. Since my case has had so much abuse And I have replaced all 6 u-joints....I figure it has to be a bearing. I mostly hear it on the road in 3rd 4th and 5th but not so much in first or second. I think that maybe everything in the case is more bound up in the first two gears.... I have changed its lube but it made no diff

Could be shredded parts of metal from a synchro that got ripped up. You said it had bigger tires. I'm guessing the tcase is stock? Could have been from the previous owner wheelin it a lil hard. If ur plannin on keepin it a trail rig I would just swap out ur tcase gears and upgrade to a higher ratio

Oh she's a trailer Queen mostly. She really need diff gears I think and that's in the plans. But I have a whole other chassie that I wheeled and dealed for so I'm good for parts for a while... 31 15.50 ags on the back all welded up....She's tough. Ive' got a welded front diff too that I might install some day....Still kinda iffy on that though. It's my tractor, toy, and the best stress med I've ever found lol. Btw, I;ve change the lube in the tranny and found no glitter in it or the case.

No glitter is a good thing I guess. Could be the bearings in the tcase. Try searching a junkyard, should be able to find something relatively close to you.
