i recently purchased a set of tracker front thirds with the 5:12's. i want to put a mini spool in the front and i was wondering if anyone has done this and what if any problems they ran into. putting the spool in is no prob i'm really just wondering if there is anything that you know i will need besides the spool to do this swap? Any help will be much appreciated thanks.

A couple of things going on here.

First, you don't want to just bolt the thirds into place. The aluminum housings will crack like eggs if you hit a decent rock while under load.

Next is the spline count. The front uses 22 and the rear uses 26 spline sidegears. So it is best just to move the r&p from the track/kick diffs to the Sammy carriers. You will need adapter kits to retain the pins and shift the carrier into the right location. You can get these kits from many of the Zook vendors.

Last is the mini spool. You probably know that a spool turns the differential into a solid locker, where both sides (tires) are going to turn exactly the same number of revolutions. Remember when you make a turn, the outside tire will rotate (travel) farther than the inside tire. While a solid locker works well in the rear (to a point), you won't be able to turn very well if you put one in the front. You may see them used in mud dragsters, they are made to run straight anyway. As I recently explained to a friend, a solid front locker may not keep you from turning the front tires from left to right. But the tires will only scrub the ground and the vehicle will still be forced to go straight. This is why when you see a rig that has air lockers front and rear, the driver will turn off the locker(s) when they have to make a tight turn. The air lockers make a destinct sound when you turn them off, so it is a major give-away when they do it.

Once you lock in your hubs, learning the hard way on the trail can get someone hurt, so be careful.

Thanks again for the help. I ended up switching the R&P to sami cases. I got a mini spool thats going in the rear now aswell. Now i'm just waiting to see how the ol' sami does with the new gears. I'm hopeing it'll put me back close to stock since im running 31-10.5's. Also i have some V tread ditch witch tires 29-12.5's that i run in the mud, but with the stock gears it just didnt have what i needed to turn them once they were burried. I'll have to repost once i get home and get them put in.
