I have to pick this Sami up tomorrow and have read conflicting info online about how to tow one of these. Most places say to tow with all four all the ground. Other places said to use a dolly with the front wheels on the ground and I'm not too comfortable with that idea. So if I get a dolly instead of a flat trailer, the conflicting info I saw was that you put the transmission in 2nd and the transfer case in neutral. It seems to me that 2nd is a low gear to have it in for towing if I have the rear wheels on the ground. Anyone have any clue before I pick up the wrong towing equipment? Obviously I'm safe with a whole car trailer, but I'd like to really know how to properly tow it with the rear wheels on the ground.

That is the correct way to dolly-tow a Samurai.

The transfer case - being in neutral - physically disconnects the rear axle from the transmission and drivetrain.

Putting the transmission in second keeps any viscus coupling action of the transfer case lubricant from turning the engine over.

If you are still concerned about this, grab a set of two 12mm, 2 13mm and 2 14mm box wrenches (I can't remember exactly which bolt size is right - hey, I'll be 60 next Tuesday!) and remove the rear driveshaft at the flanges before flat-towing it. That will totally disconnect the rear axle - end of worries. I have done this to flat-tow long distances but it will also work if you dolly-tow your new prized possession!

my understanding is the 2nd gear helps keep the transfer case from kicking into gear.

as for towing it backwards... I wouldn't... You'd need to lash the steering wheel so that it doesn't travel around on you and even then you still have the issue of your alignment being set up for forward motion not backwards. The best way to flat tow it or dolly it is with the front hubs free and the rear drive shaft disconected and strapped up. 4 bolts, easy peasy.


edit: OOHH ACK! you're not so old that you can't beat me to the answer by 1 minute.

1. You may be right about keeping the transfer case from kicking into gear...

2. Towing it backwards is BAD! I agree!

3. My typing has improved over the years. I just barely passed the Journalism School typing speed test back in college... :D

Thanks everyone for the answers. It's good to know for future ref in case I buy one of those bumper attachments to tow it behind my own truck, or an RV. I got the flat bed trailer for tomorrow so everything's fine. But before I left to go to Uhaul the guy called me to tell me my truck couldn't pull that trailer even though I knew I had a class III. So I would have had to go the dolly route and didn't want to do the dolly if I didn't have the correct info for a dolly regarding transmission and transfer case positions. Anyway, the guy realized he was wrong and everything's ready to go for tomorrow.
