2005 Forenza 2.0 I could use some help in aligning the cam gears to their exact positions before installing belt. Do the gears need to align perfectly with the marks regardless of where they stop on their own?

well, yes. really you should have noted the position of the timing marks before removing the belt. that helps you put them back in there proper position. you need to line up the marks on the gears to the marks on the valve cover when the motor is at top dead center. then put the belt on, make sure the tensioner is working, rotate the motor around twice, and back to top dead center, then make sure the timing marks are still aligned and the belt is still tight. sometimes the tensioner pulley can be finicky.one way to find top dead center is to take out the spark plug thats closest to the belts,passenger side. put a long metal rod down into the spark plug hole, dont drop it in its going to rest on the top of the piston. rotate the motor, when the metal rod reaches its highest point in the rotation the motor will be at top dead center. hope you understand this write up. any other questions dont hesitate to ask

Timing Belt

Thanks for the info, I have aligned the crank marks and both the cam marks and tightened the belt. Alignment looks good, but no compression on any cylinder. Bent valves from interference? Anything else to check before removing head?

did the timing belt brake on you? there should be some kind of compression. maybe the tensioner isnt set right and the belt isnt turning properly

the belt did break. I have checked TDC and it matches the crank marks. The tensioner and belt are tight after many rotations. How tight should it be?

ok, unfortunately the reno/forenza have whats called an interference engine. that means that if the timing belt belt brakes the chances of a valve coming into contact with a piston and bending are very high. first make sure everything is together properly, all plugs plugged, belts tight, spark plugs installed, battery connected. one thing that might cause the motor to not start could be if things were not aligned properly, meaning the timing. if it was set to tdc and everything lined up and spun freely with nothing tapping im guessing thats not the problem. i would think even if you had bent valves the motor would chug or at least want to start. when you turn the key does anything happen or nothing at all? is the battery dead?

I think I have everything right, the engine turns over quickly without any hesitation. Same turnover sounds as before I found the broken belt. Looking for a good machine shop to take the head.

Sorry to hijack your threat ntwseeker but this is a related question - how did either of you support the engine while taking off the engine mount?

Removed head and found 10 of 16 valves bent. Found machine shop to replace valves and resurface. Remember to order new head bolts at this point, local stores do not handle. Re-installed all and runs great.

For the mount, carefully use a jack (and wooden blick) to lift engine on left side and remove mount then a block or stand to support the motor.

The videos ARE golden.. Really good to see instructional videos accumulating for this car. I should have done one with the valve cover replacement..
