I just had four new sneakers installed on my SX4 and they told me the tie rods were bad and I pointed out there is only 80,000 miles on the vehicle. They also charged me to "grind" the corrosion off of the 4 steel rims. They told me that the worn tie rods were normal for the SX4 and I never had lie rods go bad on any of my suzuki's. So I think they're playing me for dumb not knowing I'm an industrial mechanic by trade and do my own work on my vehicles. So not being to familiar with the SX4 and have only replaced brakes and other normal maintenance my question is are they BSing me because the vehicle was just inspected in June and it would have been an issue then.

Am I missing something? You're an industrial mechanic, why not do your own inspection rather than ask us to guess blindly?

The mileage done is not a particularly valid indication of the condition the car should be in - you also need to consider how and where the car is used - in my neck of the woods, at 80,000 miles, the tie rods would be long gone.

He walked me out to the car grabbed the rotor and tried to move it and when there was no wiggle he turned to me and said you need to have the tire on to see the play. I guess you missed the part before I said I was an industrial mechanic that I owned 2 other suzukies that have more mileage on them and DIDN'T have bad tie rods which is why I asked the question.

80,000 miles seems OK for worn out tie rods. i changed them more often than that on my former cars but road conditions here, potholes, salt in winter, help a lot ruining everything. Maybe PA is more friendly.
Wife's SX4, similar to yours, has only 30,000km after 5 years (bought as a demo at 10,000km) ...and no problem so far.

I'm going to check them for myself some time this week for play and I can get both the inner and outer tie rods for just over $100.00 from Rock Auto. Thank you for your input.

Not sure what the brand name has to do with the mileage capability of a specific part on two different model cars. Comparing an SX4 to a Grand Vitara is like comparing a Ford Focus to an Expedition. If you do some simple forum searching you'll find many, many mentions of tie rod ends having to be swapped out on SX4s. If I were you I'd be grateful the guy mentioned it to you and saved you the trouble of bending over to look for yourself.

You see I've owned my different vehicles in my life time and have only two vehicles that I ever changed a steering part one being a 73 Ford Econoline Van drag link and a Pontiac Transport inner and outer tie rods. So that kind of shoots your assumption about comparing one vehicle to another down. Now the only reason I no longer have the vehicles in my last 10 years is they rusted out and I got tired of patching them up. So knowing most tire and brake shops live on lies and people that don't know any better I believe little that they say especially when I witnessed a shyster lie to a woman in a Monroe shop. So no I'm not grateful when the man took me out to show me they were bad and couldn't show me the play in the tie rods when he grabbed the rotor and couldn't budge it.
